Inauguration of India’s first 3D printed house a positive for PM’s affordable housing vision

India's 3D Printed House

Nirmala Sitharaman on April 27th, 2021 inaugurated the country’s first 3D printed house at the prestigious IIT Madras campus. The single-storey 3D printed house is an ideal home that suffices basic needs as it includes one bedroom, hall, and kitchen, developed explicitly with ‘Concrete 3D Printing” technology.

3D printing is a software-controlled layering of materials used to exclusively create geometrically complex three-dimensional shapes. If you are wondering what’s unique and innovative about it, allow us to tell you.  Unlike your desktop inkjet printer, 3D printers are controlled by an automatic software and this printer uses cement, liquid metals, plastics, and an assortment of other materials to form a structure.

Minister of Finance, Nirmala Sitharaman, was highly impressed with the use of indigenous methodologies in the construction of the 3D house. Referring to the completion of the house in just five days on a 600 square foot area at IIT Madras, she said, India is progressing at a fast pace and is set for a bright future in terms of accomplishing the target of building 100 million houses by 2022. She further added that India needs more talented and young aspiring minds who showcase India’s abilities to the world and glorify the name of the nation.

3D Printing technology
Benefits Of 3D Printing
It allows speedy, seamless, and meticulous construction of an intricate and tailored-made structure.
It holds the potential to cut waste to almost zero as this hi-tech printer uses limited materials.
Cut down the labour costs and help save tons of money.
3D printers support unusual complex designing of homes that are much harder to build using traditional techniques.

Chennai-based TVASTA Manufacturing Solutions constructed this 3D printed house based on the concept given by former IIT Madras students. This state-of-the-art 3D printed house is developed in association with Habitat for Humanity’s Terwilliger Centre for Innovation in Shelter who are highly known for their work of facilitating efficient and inclusive housing market systems. The growth of this organization has been nothing short of meteoric as they are on a mission to make affordable housing possible for millions of people.

Is 3D printing the future of construction?

The technique has got even builders and manufacturers pondering as to whether 3D printing is truly an alternative to traditional construction techniques or not.

There is so much hype about 3D technology because it helps in generating a photorealistic rendering. The icing on the cake is that with this technology you can do and re-do your 3D models until and unless it matches your vision and suits your requirements.

Coming back to the inauguration and scope of 3D printing in India, Nirmala Sitharaman believes that this 3D printed house invention could not come at a better time, as India is on a mission to provide ‘Affordable Housing for All by 2022’. The recent development of the 3D printed house paves the way for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s welfare scheme. This sustainable, resource-efficient, and scalable model can help India meet the deadline of building 100 million houses by 2022.

The future of 3D printing is bright as it turns out to be the biggest asset for developers, single-handedly helping them improve the quality of new residential properties. The ground-breaking development is here to push the boundaries and radically redefine construction methodologies in the coming years.
