Mumbai Municipal Corporation

Mumbai is the capital city of Maharashtra and withholds the richest Municipal Corporation. The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) or the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is the administering civic body of Mumbai. The governing unit was established under the Bombay Municipal Corporation Act, 1888, and is responsible for keeping the civic administration and structure of the sub-categorized suburbs in check. 

The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai is the primary body that is responsible for governing the urban movement and structuring of Greater Mumbai. In order to regulate and manage civil and urban development, the body stands forth and has a history of persisting civic responsibility and involvement.

Greater Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MCGM)

Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC)

In the Indian state of Maharashtra, the Thane Municipal Corporation is responsible for the city of Thane and plays a vital role in administering the city transport, services, and city’s infrastructure. The civic body is elected democratically and is headed by the Mayor. The leading political parties such as the Bhartiya Janata Party, Shiv Sena, Indian National Congress, Nationalist Congress Party, and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena hold elected offices in the enterprise.

Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC)

Located in the Thane district of Maharashtra, the Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Coporation governs the cities located in the same area and the elected members from each ward, also known as the councillors are responsible for making sure of the smooth running of the regions that come under them. The body is headed by a mayor and a deputy mayor (elected amongst the councillors) is responsible, in the absence of the mayor. The municipal corporation is also responsible for governing the transport, city’s infrastructure, and public services.

The headquarters of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation is located on the eighth floor of the building in CBD Belapur till the year 2014. It is considered one of the most efficient municipal corporations in India and was moved into a new civic building in the year 2014. The new headquarters of NMMC is now located at the Killa junction at CBD Belapur and reportedly has one of the tallest Indian National Flags at a height of about 225 feet. The municipal corporation works quite efficiently and the city is the only one in India to have separate stormwater and wastewater disposal facilities. 

The location of the city is such that it lies below the high tide level. The Municipal Corporation has come up with a method used on the lines of the Netherlands, called the “Dutch method”. Although they implemented automatic mechanical gates in order to prevent and manage the stormwater, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has used flap gates during the monsoon season which gives maintenance contract for pump houses. 

Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC)

As the name suggests, the municipal corporation of Ulhasnagar is responsible for for the city of Ulhasnagar in Maharashtra and takes care of it with the authority being shared with 78 members. This one is a part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and the Urban Thane District in the Konkan division. 

Like any other Municipal Corporation, this one also consists of democratically elected members, and headed by a mayor, and looks after the public services, affairs, and the city’s infrastructure. Members from these political parties encompass the elected offices in the civic body. 

Bhiwandi- Nizamapur Municipal Corporation (BNMC)

The civic body responsible for the region of Bhiwandi-Nizampur city was formed after the Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Council (BNCMC) was dissolved in the year 2002, by an act issued by the Government of Maharashtra. This act had the industrial township in its best interest and focussed on the betterment of this city in Maharashtra. 

Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC)

VVMC is the civic body that is responsible for governing and regulating the villages in the Vasai-Virar tehsil in the Maharashtra state. According to the 2011 census, it is the fifth largest city in Maharashtra and an extended suburb to bear more than 1.3 million population. The city is located on the north bank of the Vasai Creek, 50 km north of Mumbai. The Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation was formed on July 3rd, 2009, which involved the coming together of 53 gram panchayats and four municipal councils.  

Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC)

The city of Mira-Bhayandar in Maharashtra is governed by the Mira-Bhayandar Corporation. The body encompassses democratically elected members, and is headed by a mayor, administering the city infrastructure, the police, and public services. The Corporation is located in Bhayandar, and members of the state’s leading political parties are responsible for holding the elected offices included. 

Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC)

The Panvel Municipal Corporation is one of the first municipal corporations, formed on 25th august, 1852 in India. The primary notification that came for converting the PMC to an official Municipal Corporation in the year 1991 was never confirmed, but later, after undergoing urbanisation (after 2000), PMC was upgraded to a Municipal Corporation in the year 2016. 

The PMC is the first civic body in the Raigad district, 27th in Maharashtra, 9th in MMR (Mumbai Metropolitan Region). The Corporation includes 29 revenue villages, and covers an area of about 110sq. Kms. 

Functions of Mumbai Municipal Corporation

The act of Mumbai Municipal Corporation (launched in the year 1888) states that it is the responsibility of the MCGM to make citizens avail the basic services, including the urban and the suburban residents. 

All 9 municipalities have the same functions to perform in their respective regions, which mainly includes serving the inhabitants and making sure the structural functioning of the area and its dynamics with the regional residents. The common duties and functions of municipalities include the following:

Responsibility of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)

  • Sewerage projects, and other departments including Sewerage operation, Mumbai Sewage disposal project, etc. being directed under the direction of the Deputy Municipal Commissioner.

  • Fill in the application form from your nearest BMC ward office or the marriage registrar’s office. 

  • Attach the required documents to the form and submit it to the authority. 

  • After the form submission, the registrar would allot a date to the spouse, along with three witnesses to visit the office and sign the certificate. 

  • After signing the certificate, the applicant would receive the form within a period of 10-15 days.
