While this philanthropist, aviator, and extraordinaire has an expansive career to boast of, it’s his simplicity that has often left netizens in awe.

Given the elaborate media coverage he receives, people are often curious to learn more about his lifestyle. In this blog, we’re going to dig deeper into that and talk about the famous Ratan Tata residence in detail.

But before we get there, let us first learn about his success story as one of the best industrialists in India.

Ratan Tata’s Success Story – Inspiring in Every Way

Tata’s parents got divorced when he was just ten years old. After which, he was adopted and raised by grandmother Navajbai Tata. Before heading the Tata Group as a chairman, he kicked off his career at the Tata Steel Division as a blue-collar worker. He gave 9 good years to the company as a worker and gained as much experience as possible.

His career took a major turn when in 1971, he was appointed the Director of NELCO (National Radio and Electronics Company Limited). The company was going through a rough phase and required immediate rescue. He took it as a challenge and went on to turn things around for good.

In 1991, Tata Group’s then-chairman JRD Tata stepped down and announced Ratan Tata as the next legal chairman of the company. To upgrade the company and its practices, Ratan took charge and implemented some major changes. This included the big merger of all the Tata enterprises and the purchase of companies like Jaguar and Tetley. The decision turned out fruitful when Tata Motors got listed on the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange), earning International recognition for the company.

If you know about Ratan Tata, you’d know about his love for cars as well. He has always believed technology is the future and didn’t mind taking risks in that direction. One such example is launching the country’s first indigenously developed car, the Indica. Another one that we’re sure everyone knows about is the introduction of Nano, India’s first compact car. The idea for Nano came in when the organization realized the importance of safe travel for nuclear families. The company wanted the people of India to invest the same amount of money into a car as they would generally do in a two-wheeler. They named it a cost-effective and safe mode of transport.

Other Highlights from his Life Story

  • Statistics suggest that during Ratan Tata’s tenure as Tata Group’s chairman, the company’s sales grew 40 times. It led to an increase in profit by 50 times and more.
  • He believes that a company’s values drive it to success. The Tata Group for instance promises to remain transparent, ethical and fair in their conduct.
  • His guidance brought the company a historical contract with Ford Motors, something that most of the world’s renowned businessmen still aspire.
  • A risk-taker by nature, he established an international presence for Tata Group and worked exclusively on framing a global strategy. Today, most of the company’s revenues come from outside India only.

Ratan Tata Home – Details from his Book

‘The Story of Tata: 1868 to 2021’ by Peter Casey throws some light on Ratan Tata and gives some great details about this retirement home. Casey, who has had the opportunity to visit him in Colaba, was in awe of the simplicity of the house. According to him, Tata’s house did not look like the mansion of India’s wealthiest businessman. He talks at length about how Ratan Tata was born and brought up in a rich family, he lives the life of a professional manager. Even ‘The Times’  journalist Damin Whitworth has similar thoughts about Tata’s home. As per him, Tata’s home truly reflects his modesty and isn’t a home that you’d imagine a billionaire living in.

Tata himself admitted that he grew up amidst wealth but also spent a significant amount of time in America with a limited allowance. He was out of money and had to make ends meet doing random jobs across town. Despite leading a comfortable life back in India, it’s the struggles he faced in America that inspired him to make a name for himself.

Before moving to the Colaba home, Tata lived in a comfy flat owned by the Tata Group. It was only a few miles away from the Taj Hotel and will be returned to the company upon his demise.  That apartment was also a simple one or rather a bachelor pad that Tata shared with his pet dogs. Again, it wasn’t something that you’d think the country’s wealthiest man to be living in.
