Gariahat is less a neighborhood than a crossing that turned into an institution. The market here, with saris, footwear, street food, and hawkers spilling onto Gariahat Road and Rashbehari Avenue, has been a South Kolkata landmark for generations, long before the metro existed at all. Kalighat is the station most people point to when you ask about Gariahat, roughly 1.5 to 2 km away depending on where at the crossing you’re starting from. Rabindra Sarobar, on the Golpark and Dhakuria side, is just as valid an answer for a lot of the area, and honestly, which one is “nearer” really depends on whether you’re standing outside Gariahat Market or a few streets over toward Golpark.
