The latest package covers the 14.60-km corridor and carries a 365-day completion period. The Rs 1,510 crore project is being executed under MUTP-IIIA and is designed to separate suburban, Mail/Express and goods traffic. The existing two tracks are reported to handle 136 trains against a carrying capacity of 120. The project also includes five stations, bridges and road crossings.

Kalyan-Badlapur rail project route and key features

The expanded section runs from Kalyan towards Badlapur and adds two tracks to the existing pair. The five stations covered are Vitthalwadi, Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, Chikhloli and Badlapur. Chikhloli is the new station in the scheme, located 4.34 km from Ambernath and 3.1 km from Badlapur, with platforms, sheds, ticket counters, escalators and foot overbridges.

The project also includes two major bridges, 49 minor bridges, four road overbridges, two road underbridges and an overhead pipeline bridge. The corridor is jointly funded by the Ministry of Railways and Maharashtra government in order to add capacity while allowing different train categories to use separate tracks.

Why the new Kalyan-Badlapur lines are necessary

The pressure on this section is linked to the growth of eastern MMR suburbs. Central Railway data mentioned daily footfall at 2.08 lakh at Badlapur and 1.52 lakh at Ambernath in 2023. It also noted that Chikhloli residents often travelled 3-5 km to reach either station. The existing two tracks also carry suburban locals alongside long-distance and freight movements.

The capacity issue is not limited to peak-hour crowding. When suburban and outstation trains use the same tracks, operational disruptions can affect multiple services. Separate paths are intended to give Central Railway more room for suburban scheduling while handling Mail/Express and goods trains.

Chikhloli, located between Ambernath and Badlapur, will provide a railhead for an area that currently depends on the two neighbouring stations. The new station is planned with platforms, ticketing facilities, escalators and foot overbridges. The expansion also involves substantial supporting infrastructure, including two major bridges, 49 minor bridges, four road overbridges and two road underbridges. These works are required to accommodate the additional tracks along the 14.60-km corridor while maintaining road and rail connectivity.

Real estate impact of the Kalyan-Badlapur routes

Kalyan is the western end of the project and already functions as a major Central Railway interchange. Its property market is more established than other suburbs, so the rail expansion is more directly relevant to commuter capacity and station operations. Broader works around the Kalyan yard are also aimed at separating main-line and suburban operations.

Similarly, Ulhasnagar is already densely developed, so there is less scope for large new projects. The railway expansion mainly improves commuter travel to Ulhasnagar, Ambernath and Kalyan-Dombivli as satellite towns offering alternatives to Mumbai’s higher real estate costs. Better rail capacity could make existing housing stock more practical for Mumbai-bound workers.

Ambernath West is industrialised and Ambernath East is a predominantly residential market. The railway line will support both local workers and people travelling to Mumbai, making the station more useful for the area.

Price insights: Thane

Locality

Average property price (per sq ft)

Kalyan

Rs 7,000 – 9,500

Ulhasnagar

Rs 5,000 – 9,000

Ambernath

Rs 5,000 – 7,000

Chikhloli

Rs 4,800 – 12,500

Badlapur

Rs 5,000 – 7,000

Source: Square Yards Research

Chikhloli has the most direct property connection because the new station is being built inside a residential cluster that expanded without its own station. The new station would give Chikhloli residents direct access to rail services, making nearby housing more accessible to daily commuters travelling towards Mumbai and Thane. Moreover, the new platforms, ticketing facilities, escalators and foot overbridges will make rail access easier for residents of the growing residential area.

Badlapur already has a large affordable-housing market, making it an attractive residential option for professionals. Additional tracks could improve the capacity of the rail connection supporting this market. Badlapur is also seeing proposed road and regional connectivity projects, which could further improve accessibility and support the local property market alongside the railway expansion.

Disclaimer: This image has been created using artificial intelligence and is for illustrative purposes only.
