These are twin cities in the Thane district and Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Dombivali lies around 50 kilometres away from Mumbai while Thane lies just 27 kilometres away from it.

The KDMC is a major authority in the region along with CIDCO which is the planning body. Dombivali has been included in the Mumbai Suburban District. The area is home to several industries and factories. There are railway stations at Thakurli, Dombivali and upper Kopar. The Mumbai suburban railway network is a major connectivity lifeline for residents in the area. Both Kalyan and Panvel are connected to the area via state highways.
