The Bombay High Court directed the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) to conduct a comprehensive survey of illegal constructions within its jurisdiction and take necessary action. NMMC has been asked to complete the survey within four months. According to an NMMC report submitted on January 31, 2024, there were 6,565 illegal structures in Navi Mumbai.
The Bombay High Court criticized the Maharashtra government for failing to curb illegal constructions in Navi Mumbai, calling it a “systemic failure” caused by officials–developer nexus. The court noted that the NMMC has compiled a list of 2,100 buildings constructed either without permissions or in violation of approved plans. The court said the Maharashtra government cannot remain a “passive spectator” while middle-class home buyers suffer.
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) criticized CIDCO for auctioning a 5-acre plot in Sector 28, Nerul, which was originally reserved for public amenities, and allegedly selling it to a private builder. MNS spokesperson alleged that the land earmarked for a garden, playground, police station, divyang (disabled) centre, and senior citizens' centre has been diverted to private developers.
