MMRDA to Launch Metro Lines 2B and 9, Bhoomipujan for Thane-Borivali Tunnel and BKC Pod Taxi on April 7

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will inaugurate Metro Line 2B (Phase I) and Metro Line 9 (Phase I), and conduct the bhoomipujan for the Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel project and the pod taxi system in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) on April 7. These projects aim to significantly reduce travel time, ease congestion, and improve connectivity across Mumbai's suburbs.

Infrastructure Projects Aim to Ease Traffic Congestion in Thane

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stated that the state government is prioritizing the resolution of traffic congestion in Thane through key infrastructure projects like the Coastal Road and elevated corridors. These projects are progressing steadily and are expected to significantly improve traffic flow.

Eastern Freeway Extension to Cut Mumbai-Thane Travel to 25 Minutes

MMRDA plans to extend the Eastern Freeway, significantly reducing travel time between Mumbai and Thane to approximately 25 minutes. This project aims improve connectivity to commercial and residential hubs, of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The extension will connect the Eastern Freeway with the Thane-Belapur Road, facilitating smoother access to vital commercial and residential areas.

Mumbai Monorail Set for Overhaul and Relaunch

Four companies have been shortlisted for the operations and maintenance contract for the Mumbai Monorail's Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk–Chembur arm. This is part of a system-wide overhaul, including a signalling upgrade and deployment of new rakes, aiming to reopen the system by April 2026 and improve its efficiency and reliability.

Mumbai Monorail services will be temporarily suspended from September 20, 2025, until further notice, to carry out major upgrades aimed at making the system safer, smoother, and more reliable. The entire 19.74-kilometre route between Chembur and Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk (Jacob Circle) will be closed to accelerate the integration of new rolling stock, installation of an advanced Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system developed in Hyderabad, and refurbishment of ageing rakes. Ten new 'Make in India' train rakes are being procured, with eight already delivered. The suspension follows a series of recent technical failures and will enable uninterrupted installation, commissioning, and testing of new systems and complete overhauling of older rakes. The new CBTC system promises enhanced safety, shorter train intervals, and greater reliability.
