Kolkata Metro is actively working to reduce its carbon footprint by increasing its reliance on solar power. This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote sustainable infrastructure and combat air pollution in the city.
The Yellow Line extension of the Kolkata Metro, from Noapara to New Barrackpore, is scheduled for commissioning in the latter half of 2026. While further extensions are pending land acquisition, this phase will improve connectivity in the northern parts of the city. The Kavi Subhash station is also expected to be fully functional by mid-2026 after reconstruction, facilitating seamless inter-line transfers.
Construction work for the Chingrighata Metro project in Kolkata is stalled and unlikely to resume in March due to the need for traffic diversions and clearance from Kolkata Police. Metro officials are in talks with the police to find a suitable window for construction to recommence, which is crucial for alleviating traffic pressure on the EM Bypass.
East Kolkata is preparing for the inauguration of several infrastructure projects. The renovated Debi Ghat in Dakshindari will reopen, and a second bailey bridge over the Kestopur Canal will connect AA Block to Dakshindari, easing traffic congestion. The Airport-New Garia Metro (Orange Line) aims to complete the Chingrighata crossing section by February 15, 2026, with the entire line expected to open later in the year. The Yellow Line extension to New Barrackpore is targeted for August 2026.
The Kolkata Metro Purple Line is increasing its weekday services from 80 to 84 trains starting December 1, 2025, to improve connectivity for passengers, especially those using Majerhat station to connect with Eastern Railway trains. The first and last train timings have been revised, with the first train from Joka leaving at 6:40 AM and the last train from Majerhat departing at 9:26 PM.
