Do lease agreements need to be registered?

A lease agreement for immovable property for a period of one year or more in India must be registered under the Registration Act of 1908. The lease must be registered by documenting the terms of the agreement and paying a registration fee to the government. Failure to register a required lease can result in legal penalties and the lease being declared invalid.
