Khadki is known as the base of the Indian army. It has 2 ordinance factories, 2 ammunition factories, and military vehicle depot, and an army dairy firm. It was earlier known as Kirkee during British rule. 2 army establishments now surround it. One is a College of Military Engineering, popularly known as CME, and the other is Bombay Engineering Group. This is India's richest cantonment and the world's largest one if combined with the Pune cantonment. Its entire area comes under the green zone and plays a crucial role in controlling the city's pollution level that is green, and quiet. For many years, the name of this city i.e. Khadki has been confusing. In 1817, the historic battle of Khadki, also known as the Battle of Kirkee was fought between the Maratha Army led by Peshwa Bajirao 2 and the East India Company's army led by Col Burr and Capt Ford. The East India Company won the battle, and Khadki was renamed Kirkee as the name Khadki was challenging to pronounce to them. Even post-independence, the authorities chose to continue with the name Kirkee. Subsequently, after many years the original name "Khadki" was restored and was resolved to be used as and in all official communication between the army and the cantonment authorities.
Khadki is a beautiful, serene, and secure locality, clear from traffic noise and pollution, unlike other cities. It is also near schools, colleges, and hospitals. This locality is a very well-connected, central locality within walking distance of Pune University and its Botanical Gardens, a city shopping center near MG Road, Koregaon Park.
