Key Insights
of Dharavi

Dharavi is situated in Mumbai and is home to one of the world’s biggest slums. The location existed long before India achieved Independence and was inhabited by both Indian and European workers before Independence.

Brief Description – Dharavi

Dharavi colony was founded in 1884. It was originally obstructed by fishermen when the region still comprised streams and wetlands. When the marsh began to fill in owing to natural and anthropogenic causes, it became appealing to migrant labourers from South Mumbai and elsewhere. Whilst poor rural Indians came to Mumbai, the region developed.

Dharavi is a multi-religious, multi-ethnic, and diversified community. Dharavi is considered one of India's most literate slums, with a literacy rate of 69%. Like many others, the slum lacks sanitation, sewers, safe drinking water, roads, and other essential utilities. However, most of these ideas failed due to a lack of financial and political backing. The government proposed upgrading the slum into a contemporary township complete with suitable homes, retail malls, hospitals, and schools. While the project is expected to cost $2.1 billion.

Surprisingly, there is only one toilet for every 1400 Dharavi people. Fortunately, the homes have consistent water and electrical supplies. According to estimates, around 430 people dwell on every acre of land in the Dharavi slum.
