Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Overview 2022-23

A social welfare programme launched by then-Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1985 as ‘Indra Awas Yojana’ continues to thrive today as ‘Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana ‘or PMAY. The IAY has been restructured to meet the current needs and scenarios of the rural population, ensuring that they have a roof over their heads. The Government of India’s Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana scheme has a clear vision of replacing all temporary (kutcha) houses with permanent (pukka) houses by the end of 2022.

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana 2022  is a scheme by the Government of India to provide the economically weaker section of society with affordable housing, and to construct 2 crores (20 million) budget-friendly houses by 2022. It is divided into two parts: Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban or PMAY-U for society’s urban poor population and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin or PMAY-G / PMAY-R for society’s rural poor population. This initiative is combined with other government schemes for ensuring that houses have sanitary toilets, Ujjwala Yojana LPG connections, Saubhagya Yojana electricity connections, Jan Dhan banking offices, and access to drinking water, among other necessities.

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban provides central assistance to all Indian states and union territories through different organisations to achieve the goals of the Indian government’s PMAY Housing for All scheme. To promote women’s empowerment through property ownership, the female head of the family must be either the owner or the co-owner of the residence created under PMAY-Urban.

Features and Benefits of PMAY Urban

The Federal Government and the State Government will split the costs of assistance in a ratio of 60:40 for the plain region and a ratio of 90:10  for the hilly regions, which includes the Northeast and Himalayan states.
