Industry leaders decode the transformation of Facebook to Meta

Global social media behemoth Facebook has officially changed its parent entity’s name to Meta. Yet, applications like WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram will retain their original names despite the massive rebranding campaign set to follow. Facebook has billions of global users for its social media platforms.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO, stated that the company is now called Meta, while adding that the mission will be similar, connecting more people through its platforms, apps and brands. He also stated that the company has come out from a learning experience owing to its struggles with closed platforms and social problems. Zuckerberg stated that this was the best time to channelize this knowledge and build the next chapter, at his annual developers’ conference.

Technology and industry leaders are still decoding the impact of the change to Meta. The Co-Founder and CIO, Square Yards, Hitesh Singla, stated that Metaverse will be the future of social since Mark Zuckerberg is aiming at aligning of the total company vision with the same. He added that a change of name helps in accomplishing this swiftly and this is a major statement by itself.

Other experts felt that Metaverse means a vision for internet in the future in the works of Neal Stephenson. Facebook, according to them, is attempting to go with that kind of vision, while becoming more than only a social media entity. Mark Zuckerberg has already stated that the company will not be linked only to the Facebook application or social media. Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson talks of Metaverse, where human beings interact as virtual space avatars. Zuckerberg may be hinting at the same through the acquisition of AR (augmented reality) brand Occulus Rift.

Other experts feel that Metaverse will mean that everything comes in 3D in place of 2D eventually and this is why the company name will be changed likewise. The short form of Metaverse will thus be Meta.
