Barrackpore has its own railway station on the Sealdah-Ranaghat line of the suburban railway network. The Barrackpore-Dum Dum Expressway is a major project while the widening of the Jessore Road and NH-34 are major initiatives along with strengthening the B.T. Road as part of the North-South Corridor project. Barrackpore also offers excellent bus connectivity. There are several bus lines operated by CSTC, STA, MM Series, JM Series and many other operators. The bus network links Barrackpore to most parts of Kolkata and also to neighboring areas like Sodepur, Agarpara, Titagarh, Khardah, Ichapur, Naihati and Shyamnagar.
Barrackpore is home to innumerable industrial establishments on the banks of the Hooghly including cotton, jute, paper and engineering industries. There is also a strong handicrafts and cottage industry here. The Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute is located in Barrackpore along with Palta Water Works. There are several reputed educational institutions in the area including the Barrackpore Rastraguru Surendranath College, Mahadevananda Mahavidyalaya, Adamas International School and several other primary and play schools like the First Step Play School. Property prices have gone up by approximately 14.81% in the area as per Q3 2015 and average prices stand at around INR 2, 572 per sq. ft. here for the same period.
