Dum Dum is a major residential neighborhood in North and is one of the major entry points to Kolkata. The area is home to the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport which was earlier called the Dum Dum Airport. Dum Dum is a well developed locality of the city and is home to the Ordnance Factory, Gun & Shell Factory and other organizations. Dum Dum has several well known localities nearby like Nager Bazar, Belghoria and Cossipore among others.

Demand for property in Dum Dum is always high since it is comparatively affordable as compared to South and Central Kolkata and also offers fabulous connectivity to every part of the city and its outskirts. The Kolkata Metro terminates at Dum Dum and this is a major connectivity lifeline for residents. Some trains also terminate at Noapara which is a neighboring station. The Airport lies on the periphery of the locality while the Dum Dum railway station lies adjacent to the metro station itself and offers great connectivity throughout the Sealdah-Ranaghat line. The Circular railway also terminates at this station. Other railway stations in the locality are present at Patipukur, Airport Gate No. 1 and the Dum Dum Cantonment.

Bus transport facilities are readily available throughout the area along with auto rickshaws. Bangur Avenue, Lake Town, Nagerbazar, Cantonment, Central Kolkata (Esplanade), VIP Road, BT Road, Chiriamore and the Howrah railway station are all easily accessible from Dum Dum. Areas like Birati, Paikpara, Sodepur, Shyamnagar, Keshtopur, , Teghoria, Kalindi and Sinthee are all well connected to the area along with Rajarhat and Salt Lake.

Dum Dum is also home to several reputed educational institutions like the Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship, Dum Dum Motijheel Science College, Dum Dum Arts College, Sarojini Naidu Girls College and several government and private schools including KV Cossipore, Auxilium Convent, Aditya Academy, Indira Gandhi Memorial School, Calcutta Airport English High School and the WWA Cossipore English High School. Dum Dum enables easy access to south and central Kolkata including the business district. It is dotted with shopping centres, retail outlets and markets. Leading hospitals are also well linked to Dum Dum.

Dum Dum also offers easy access to several neighborhoods like Shyambazar, Bagbazar, Maniktala and Sovabazar among others. Dum Dum offers top notch connectivity and transport facilities and this has fueled demand for housing units here. Property prices have gone up by approximately 3.85% in the area as per Q3 2015 and average prices stand at around INR 4, 613 per sq. ft. here for the same period.
