Rajarhat New town is a major neighborhood that is part of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation and New Town is a major hub for IT and residential development. The master plan for Rajarhat New Town envisions a future township that is even bigger than the neighboring Salt Lake City. Rajarhat New Town has been declared as a Solar City by the previous UPA Government and initiatives are now being taken to declare this as a Smart Green City courtesy the BJP led Central Government and Government of West Bengal. HIDCO is a major development agency in this region.

Rajarhat offers great connectivity options to residents including the Rajarhat Main Road, major arterial roads that run parallel to the main road and link Basanti Road and the Kolkata Airport through the New Town CBD and IT hub and of course, the EM Bypass which is well connected to it along with the VIP Road and other important roads. Bus transport facilities are readily available here. The New Garia-Airport line of the Kolkata Metro extension project will be passing through New Town. There is a proposal for extending the Circular Railway from Bidhannagar Road or Ultadanga to New Town through Salt Lake and Lake Town. The Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport is well connected to the area. The EM Bypass enables great connectivity to several parts of Kolkata, particularly the eastern and southern zones.

10.5 kilometres in Rajarhat New Town is a Wi-Fi Zone which links the main arterial road to the airport and also to Sector V. This is a green corridor and is the first Wi-Fi road in the country. A Flyover has been built in Action Area-I and there are proposals for several expressways and flyovers to ease traffic congestion. The entire zone is home to several IT Parks including the DLF IT Park. Companies like TCS and Wipro are present here in addition to IBM, HP, Tech Mahindra, Capgemini, Philips, Vodafone, Ericsson, Genpact and Accenture. The New Town Arbitration and Financial Hub is also present here while the Sector V IT and commercial hub is also well linked to the area. The World Trade Centre, TCS SEZ, EcoSpace business Park, Unitech and other major business zones are present here along with several Government organizations and offices.

Other developments like the Arts Acre and the Eco-Tourism Park have garnered greater attention from home buyers due to their recreational and entertainment quotients. There are several educational institutions in the area and land has been allotted to more than 30 leading institutions like Presidency University, Rabindra Bharati University, Amity University, St. Xavier’s College and Techno India for their campuses. Land has also been allotted for another IIT Kharagpur campus while the Institute of Engineering and Management is also present here. The New Town School, Delhi Public School, Calcutta Airport English High School, Calcutta Public School and Holy Public School are major schools in the neighborhood. Leading hospitals like the Tata Cancer Centre, Apollo Clinic, Ohio Heart Hospital, UMRI, AMRI, Disha, Park Hospital and Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute are present here. Along with Apollo, Belle Vue will also be setting up its second clinic in the area.

City Centre 2, Home Town Mall and Axis Mall are major shopping malls in the area while the upcoming developments include the Rajarhat Central Mall, Unitech Downtown Mall and Centrus Mall. Rabindra Tirtha, Vivek Tirtha and Nazrul Tirtha are major recreational zones along with the wax museum, Nalban, Vedic Village, Aquatica and star hotels like Taj Gateway, ITC Sonar, Hyatt Regency and JW Marriott which are located nearby. The Swissotel Kolkata Neotia Vista and Novotel are located in the neighborhood itself along with the Pipal Tree and upcoming Westin, Eastin Easy and Ibis. Property prices have gone up by approximately 4.51% in the area as per Q3 2015 and average prices stand at around INR 4, 240 per sq. ft. here for the same period.
