Brief Description – Marine Lines

Marine Lines is a neighbourhood in South Mumbai. The name Marine Lines comes from the Marine Battalion Lines, a British military establishment built in the nineteenth century. The battalion was later converted into air force housing and is now located just south of Metro Adlabs. It's also the name of a train station on the Mumbai suburban railway's Western Railway line. Marine Lines was also the name of the street where the Bombay Hospital and Liberty Cinema are located. V Thackersey Marg is now its official name. The famous promenade near the station is known as Marine Drive. One of the most splendid Art Deco residential buildings facing the sea can be found in Marine Drive. It is India's oldest aquarium, and it is named after Parsi entrepreneur DB Taraporewala, who contributed funds to its development. If you're visiting Mumbai during monsoon, Marine Drive is one of the best places to see the monsoon.

Chandanwadi is a Muslim cemetery and municipal crematorium located near the station. The famous Marine Drive flyover is adjacent to the station; it is the only link to Marine Drive over the tracks from Princess Street to the end of Princess Street. Marine Drive/Marine Lines is also known as the Queen's Necklace because the street lights, when viewed at night from any elevation along the drive, resemble a string of pearls in a necklace. At Marine Drive, signage makes the UNESCO tag visible.
