Kurla lies just north of Mumbai city limits and has its own railway station which is one of the busiest stations on the harbor and central railway lines of the country. Kurla’s central location makes it easily accessible from all parts of Mumbai. The Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg or the Old Agra Road is a major arterial road in the western part of the locality. The road passes through Kurla and Ghatkopar on its way towards Thane. The Andheri-Kurla Road connects the area to Andheri through Saki Naka. The CST Road goes to Santacruz while the Kurla Depot Junction is one of the busiest on the LBS Marg and has one arm going towards the Western Express Highway and one towards the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road flyover.
The Santacruz-Chembur Link Road connects the western and eastern parts of Kurla through an over bridge over the Central railway line. This is the first double decker flyover in the city. The road also connects directly to the Eastern Express Highway at the Amar Mahal Junction. The Eastern Expressway Highway runs from the Sion Causeway to Mulund. BEST buses travel throughout the entire locality along with MSRTC buses. Public transport facilities like auto rickshaws are readily available in the locality. The Bandra-Kurla Complex is easily accessible from Kurla and is the showpiece commercial hub of Mumbai. The BKC is home to the biggest companies in Mumbai and attracts a large chunk of Mumbai’s working population every day.
There are several educational institutions in and around the area including the Vivek English High School, Eden Junior College, Don Bosco Institute of Technology, Kohinoor Business Management, Green Bombay High School, Gandhi Bal Mandir High School, Holy Cross High School, Siddiqui English High School, Kohinoor International School, Michael High School, M.E.S. Urdu School, Nehru Nagar Municipal School, Sant Gadge Maharaj Vidyalaya, Shivaji Vidyalaya, Shishu Vihar, St Jude’s High School, St Joseph’s High School and the Swami Vivekanand High School and College among others.
Leading hospitals in and around Kurla include the Khan Bahadur Bhabha Municipal General Hospital, Aryan Hospital, Kohinoor City Hospital, Central Hospital, Sindhu Maternity & Nursing Home, Kurla Nursing Home and many other clinics and nursing homes. The BMC is currently working on developing an elevated bus terminal at the Kurla railway station by the year 2019. There may also be a ropeway from Kurla to the Bandra-Kurla Complex in the future since the MMRDA is considering this project, slated to be the first ropeway in the city. Phase 2 of the monorail network and the metro project will also boost connectivity in Kurla in the near future.
Property prices have gone up by approximately 0.74% in the area as per Q3 2015 and average prices stand at around INR 15, 095 per sq. ft. here for the same period. Popular projects include HDIL Galaxy Apartments, Ruparel Solitaire, Dheeraj Liv Smart and many others.
