How safe is the Agra Lucknow Expressway?

The Agra Lucknow Expressway route was thrown open to the public in December 2016 but in reality, it is far from completion. There are many safety issues that common people have experienced during their commute on the Agra Lucknow Expressway. First, only one side of the expressway is open for the first few kilometers since the construction is incomplete. So you need to be extra careful since you can encounter cars coming on the wrong side. Keep your car filled with gas and petrol because there are no facilities for a long distance. The only backup is the UP police patrol units which can be spotted every few kilometers. It is recommended that you should not travel at night on the expressway since there are not many people around.

Agra-Lucknow Expressway speed limit

The speed limit for cars on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway is 100 kmph and 60 kmph for heavy vehicles such as buses and trucks. The speed of your vehicle is checked by the Agra Lucknow Expressway UPEIDA at the starting and the ending of the route.

The UPEIDA has also levied a speeding tax for those who cover the 302 km distance from Agra to Lucknow in less than three hours. It has also released a strict warning regarding the same for the commuters.

Traffic management at Agra Lucknow Expressway

There is an advanced traffic management system at the Agra Lucknow Expressway. A total of 152 emergency call boxes have been installed at a distance of every 4 kms along with 50 CCTV cameras. There are 10 number plate and speed detection cameras installed on the entire expressway. To keep a check on speeding, the commuters are also served with e-challans.

However, safety is still a major concern for the authorities who regulate the Agra Lucknow expressway route. These are the words of the UPEIDA chief, Awanish Kumar Awasthi who addressed the media in 2020: “We have put a lot of things in place. We have put an agency in place to keep the Expressway free of animals, rumblers have been put in place and ambulances have been deployed to save the golden hours. We have installed extremely good cameras on the Expressway. Anyone who crosses the road in less than three hours is automatically issued challans. These challans have brought down the accidents by 50%. However, still, we are having accidents as traffic on this Expressway is very high. Our challenge will always be road safety and we are trying to resolve that.”
