KMP or Western Peripheral Expressway: All You need to know

KMP Expressway or the Western Peripheral Expressway is the major expressway that plays an important role in maintaining the air quality of Delhi. This expressway diversifies more than 50,00 heavy vehicles away from the capital.

As the longest expressway in Haryana, the KMP expressway is 135.6 kilometers long. It is a six-lane operational expressway that has three lanes in both directions. This is a western peripheral expressway that has a positive impact on both Delhi and Haryana.

Overview of KMP Expressway (Western Peripheral Expressway)

WPE or the Western Peripheral Expressway or KMP Expressway is maintained by the state of Haryana by the State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC). Along with the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE), this Western Peripheral Expressway makes the largest ring road in the capital of India, Delhi.

KMP Expressway full form is Kundli Manesar Palwal Expressway. This KMP highway proposal was made in the year 2003. The construction plan of the KMP highway was on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) model, which begins from the National Highway (NH) 1 near Kundli, Sonipat to the National Highway (NH) 2 near Palwal along with the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE). The state of Delhi paid for half the land acquisition cost for Kundli Manesar Palwal Expressway. They agreed to pay the amount as it will diversify half of the heavy vehicle traffic from the capital to the expressway.

The state of Haryana started work for the KMP expressway route in the year 2006. The operations on this KMP highway route were delayed for more than a decade. After the Supreme Court of India intervened in the western peripheral highway, new bids were invited for the expressway in January 2016. After this expressway, the Kundli Manesar Palwal Expressway was finally constructed and completed as well as became operational in November 2018.

The Western Peripheral Expressway is a six lane greenway highway that is hoisted at the junctions of roads. It also has the underpass for the cattle, tractors, and cars as well as barricades that helps in controlling the entry of animal and also has 24*7 surveillance service. This Kundli Manesar Palwal Expressway helped and continues to help for smooth and quick transportation of the foodgrains, fruits, milk products, and vegetables from the state of Punjab, Haryana, Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh to the other parts of the country.

Safety for People on KMP Expressway

As for now, this 135.6 long KMP exp[ressway lacks some of the basic facilities. It is still incomplete and unlit on the expressway, which makes this expressway prone to accidents. Even though this expressway was launched two years back by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the perils for the commuters started and were highlighted just after one year of its operation. Till now, more than 400 mishappenings and more than 100 fatalities have been recorded on the Western Peripheral.

The major contributing cause for these mishappenings has been noticed because of the efficiently unlit KMP expressway route. 70% of these accidents took place either in the evenings or at night.

Also, most of the contractors are yet to complete the expressway accusation raised by the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC).
