Mumbai was formed by reclamation. Till this time, Byculla was an extension of Mazgaon. And it used to inundate during high tides. It was only after the amalgamation of the seven islands that Byculla became a center of housing and textiles. It is also well connected to South Mumbai and its suburbs via the central rail network.

Byculla is classified in Ward "E" within the municipal boundaries of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation or BMC.
