Wakad was once mostly known for its four-day Mhatoba Utsav, a traditional festival dating back to over 450 years honouring Mhatoba the village deity. It’s hard to imagine that once, Wakad was mainly farmland where crops like groundnuts and sugarcane flourished. Today Wakad is unrecognisable. The changes swept up the neighbouring village of Hinjewadi as well as Wakad in its wake as well.The locality has seen an influx of many IT industries which is also a reason for property investments. 

What’s Great / What’s Not Great about Wakad

The locality is in close proximity to Mumbai Highway. It is well connected to various other localities of Pune. It has a planned metro route. It is also located very close to Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjewadi. However, there is a problem of traffic congestion in Wakad. People of Wakad also complain of inadequate water supply in their homes. 

Physical Infrastructure and Livability Index

Wakad, along with other smaller areas like Pimple Saudagar, began to develop as a result of the meteoric demand for economical housing from the influx of migrants coming in for employment in IT and manufacturing companies. Located in the scenic west of Pune, Wakad offers these affordable alternatives to the now well-developed and upscale areas like Baner and Aundh.

It is well-connected through Mumbai Highway (NH-48), Wakad-Bhosari BRTS Road and Aundh-Ravet BRTS Road. Buses operated by Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) connect Wakad with different parts of Pune. Pune Junction Railway Station (17 km) and Pune International Airport (23 km) can be reached in an hour. Also, the 23.3 km planned metro Line 3 (Hinjewadi Phase III - Civil Court) would further improve the physical infrastructure of Baner and boost connectivity in the region. 

Wakad is situated on the north-western outskirts of Pune. Placed alongside the Mumbai highway, the locality is closely surrounded by areas like Pimple Saudagar, Thergaon, Tathawade, Hinjewadi, Balewadi and Baner. It has emerged as a growing residential locality owing to sound connectivity, proximity to Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjewadi and availability of ample property options.

Wakad is dominated by multi-storey apartment projects, some of which are Akshar Elementa, Kolte Patil Western Avenue, Sapphire Park Co-Op Housing Society, Sonigara Kesar and Kalpataru Harmony, among others.

Wakad has unbeatable connectivity with the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Wakad road, and Kalewadi main road going through it. Wakad bus stand and Pimpri bus stand are closeby while Chinchwad Railway Station is approximately 10 kms away. 

The Nashik-Phata BRT corridor is in close proximity, and Pune Airport lies about 45 minutes away. It is also close to the clutch of biotech companies that are situated along the highway as well as manufacturing and industrial belts like Pimpri Chinchwad, Chakan, and Talegaon.

Wakad is situated in a sweet spot, right next to Hinjewadi, which offers a plethora of employment opportunities. Teerth Technospace, Prabhavee Tech Park, Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park, Embassy Tech Zone, and Hinjewadi IT Park are just some of the options that lie within a 10-kilometre radius. Slightly further away at about 15 kilometres is Talawade IT Park, which also houses prominent firms like Capgemini and Syntel. Wakad is surrounded by some of the most sought-after neighbourhoods that Pune can boast of.
