Perungudi, Chennai

Perungudi is a commercial-cum residential locality in Chennai. It is situated along the Old Mahabalipuram Road and has the Perungudi Lake on the opposite side. Beautiful natural landscapes consisting of marshes and paddy fields touch the locality at its western end. On the market front, the locality has several plots and 2 BHKs and 3 BHKs available for both sale and rental purposes. 

What’s Great About the Locality

The locality has a majority of independent-standing houses or mid-rise apartments. But what drives the residential demands here is the close proximity of IT hubs along the Old Mahabalipuram Road which runs along Perungudi. To name a few, you will find the Ascendas IT Park, TVH Agnitio Park, TIDEL Park and Chennai One IT SEZ nearby. 

The locality also offers great connectivity with a dedicated railway station on the Chennai Beach-St Thomas Mount stretch. 

What’s Not Great About the Locality

Pollution around the locality has been one of the most severe problems that the locals have been dealing with here. The presence of several IT and commercial hubs increases the flow of traffic during peak office hours causing heavy jams that can last for hours. Especially at the toll plaza, the traffic congestion there is rampant and often causes a lot of trouble. The huge flow of traffic in turn has also been the reason for rising air pollution around the locality. Even the marshland around the locality has continued to remain polluted despite several attempts at its restoration. 

Another problem is the presence of a huge amount of plastic in the groundwater around Perungudi. The plastic all comes from the Perungudi dump yard which has been troubling the residents for a long time now. Speaking of water, there is also an issue with the water supply which has been erratic for a while now,  owing to the inadequate pipeline infrastructure.

The locality is surrounded by various major roads. Some of the few important roads that help in its connectivity are the Rajiv Gandhi IT Expressway, Inner Ring Road, East Coast Road and Old Mahabalipuram Road. The locality also has its own dedicated railway station on the Chennai Beach-St Thomas Mount stretch which enables greater ease of commuting. Perungudi also shares close proximity to two metro stations, namely the Alandur Metro Station and the St Thomas Mount metro station. It is some 15 km from the Chennai International Airport which one can easily reach in a short time.
