Tambaram, Chennai

  • 4.0
  • (2 Reviews)

South Chennai has a few areas as recognizable to commuters as Tambaram. Built around one of the city's busier railway junctions, it has grown into a locality where established housing, schools, hospitals, and neighborhood markets sit within easy reach of daily life. Rents and sale prices here also tend to be more forgiving than in several other parts of the city, which keeps the area on the list for families, working professionals, and tenants weighing their options.

About Tambaram, Chennai

Railways built this place, in a sense. Tambaram took shape around a junction that still serves the southern stretch of Chennai, and decades of suburban trains, bus routes, and arterial roads have pulled residential growth along with them. For anyone commuting into the city or across to nearby southern neighborhoods, that history translates into a genuinely convenient base.

Administratively, the locality sits within Chennai South, under pin code 600059. What you'll find here is a mixed bag—apartment blocks next to older independent houses, builder floors tucked into plotted layouts, spread across several pockets that each carry their own character. Schools, hospitals, banks, and neighborhood markets are woven through the surrounding streets rather than clustered in one spot.

There's also a wider significance to the location. Tambaram sits along a major southern transport corridor, and the nearby Air Force Station has long served as a landmark that people use for directions as much as for its institutional role. Road and rail links tie the area to neighboring commercial and employment hubs.

Air Force Station — Key Landmark Near Tambaram

Ask for directions around here and someone will likely mention the Air Force Station. It's one of Tambaram's most recognizable landmarks, and beyond its institutional role, it has become something of a fixed reference point for anyone navigating this part of South Chennai.

Roads around the station connect back to residential pockets, transport hubs, and other destinations across the southern suburbs.

Chromepet — Nearby Commercial Hub

A short distance from Tambaram sits Chromepet, an established commercial and residential pocket in its own right. Retail stores, local markets, restaurants, banks, schools, and hospitals here serve residents well beyond Chromepet's own boundaries.

That proximity gives Tambaram residents another commercial centre to fall back on, plus additional road and transit links deeper into South Chennai.

Tambaram Good to Live in Chennai?

Strip away the specifics and Tambaram's appeal comes down to a fairly simple combination: reliable rail access, a public transport network that actually works, and social infrastructure — schools, hospitals, markets — that's already built out. Housing options range from apartments to independent houses to plotted properties, so buyers aren't boxed into one segment.

The railway station remains the single biggest draw for daily commuters. Add in road connections to Chromepet, Velachery, and Guindy, and the locality's accessibility case gets stronger still.

None of this makes Tambaram flashy. It does make it practical — which, for families, professionals, and tenants looking for a well-connected part of South Chennai, tends to matter more.

It's a developed area near railway stations, airport markets, etc. Easy connectivity via metro is a plus point there. It is a safe place without power cut and good transportation facility. The local people are very helpful and have a loving attitude

The locality has a gated colony with partial construction done with boundary walls. The locality has nearby top-rated Schools and Colleges. It has nearby top-rated Hospitals. Easy accessibility to Major Roads in Chennai.Tambaram is a very great location and well connected by Tambaram Railway station also going to a terminus for all south trains. Transport facility is also good in this locality. It has easy access to 200ft bypass road and 400ft outer ring road, biggest bus terminus is coming up near Vandalur. Well known Madras Christian college and many schools, shopping centres etc, are available.Too many street dogs lying on the roads and they make their victim the entire person who passes from them. Even at night time the dogs entering almost all residential premises and damaging the cloths and slaughtering the pets and poor cats.Tambaram Traffic plays a major role in disliking this locality due to large number of vehicles transports into chennai which also results in air pollution. Tambaram road is terrific only in the monsoon season because the water gets logged and its difficult for us to drive. Power cut happens more often. Also garbage maintenance is a big issues now a days.
