Dehradun Smart City: Objective, Projects, Current Status

Words cannot adequately describe Uttarakhand, which has Dehradun as its interim capital. Others refer to it as the ‘abode of Gods,’ while others refer to ‘heaven on earth.’ One thing is sure, though: once a visitor is mesmerised by the beauty of the city, they remain so.

According to the Mahabharata epic, Guru Dronacharya founded Dehradun, now one of India’s most progressive cities. A gateway to the Garhwal Himalayas, Dehradun is a point of entry to the revered pilgrimage sites of Haridwar and Rishikesh as well as the well-known hill station of Mussoorie. The Doon Valley is situated between the Ganga and the Yamuna, the two most significant rivers in India.

The Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority has begun implementing innovative projects to enhance the quality of life for its residents, including the redevelopment of various areas, beautification, road enlargement, and the use of disaster management, LED lighting, solid waste management, etc.

As part of this mission, a SMART City Dehradun Plan was prepared, and the city developed its own distinctive vision and strategies using input from citizens and stakeholders. All citizens and stakeholders were urged by the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority to contribute their thoughts, ideas, and creative solutions. 

Dehradun Smart City

Phase 4 of the Smart City Dehradun Mission project officially recognised Dehradun as one of the smart cities that the Indian government had chosen. Dehradun was added to the list in the year 2017, and former Uttarakhand Chief Minister, Shree Trivendra Singh Rawat hosted the Smart City Mission’s foundation day on June 25, 2019. To raise the standard of living for Indian citizens, the Indian government launched the bold and innovative Smart City Dehradun Mission. The Smart City Dehradun project, on the other hand, aims to offer the locals of Dehradun essential infrastructure, an environment that is healthy and sustainable, smart solutions and its applications, and a high standard of living.

Objectives of Dehradun Smart City

The Indian Government and the State Government of Uttarakhand are collaborating to achieve the following goals for smart city Dehradun project:-

• The project’s goal is to improve the city’s essential infrastructure.
• Provide citizens with application solutions that are smart, such as e-governance and tax payment systems.
• Boost the state’s economy.
• Ensure that people can live in safety and dignity. AMRUT, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Housing for All (Urban), HRIDAY, Swachh Bharat, and National Urban Livelihoods Mission are just a few of the flagship programs that help to make the initiative prosper.
• Ensure that the city is developed sustainably. 10 out of the 60 wards in Dehradun are covered by the Smart City Mission.

Implementing Agency for the Smart City of Dehradun

A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for the project’s implementation, Dehradun Smart City Limited (DSCL), was established under the Indian Companies Act of 2013. Dr. R. Rajesh Kumar is the SPV’s CEO and Director. The government has appointed him to the position of Dehradun District Magistrate.

Current Status of the Dehradun Smart City Mission

The Smart City Dehradun Mission’s status as of February 2022 has been mentioned below:-

Dehradun won the prize for best Smart City in 2020. A competition between the 100 smart cities in the country for the year 2020 was organised by the Urban Affairs Ministry. Residents received a system for water meter and access to clean drinking water as part of the award.

Additionally, the city received recognition in 2021 at the National Water and Sanitation Innovation Summit for supervisory control and data collection. A public-private partnership was used for this project, which has 24 water ATMs installed. In addition to clock towers and bus stops, there are water ATMs everywhere. With the help of the project’s energy-saving cost-sharing model, the smart city Dehradun will save Rs 35 crore over the course of ten years.

In 2021, Sadaiv Doon, a control centre for the smart city of Dehradun, will be launched by Dehradun Smart City Limited. There are 500 CCTV cameras set up at 200 locations as part of the Dehradun Integrated Command and Control Centre, which controls traffic.

• Email Address

Step 3: Select ‘Submit.’
