On July 12, the Maharashtra government dedicated nine rail projects in Maharashtra to the public across Nagpur, Nashik, Satara, Sangli, Chandrapur and Amravati, with a total investment of Rs 484 crore. Developed by MahaRail (Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited), the projects include road over bridges (ROBs), road under bridges (RUBs), subways and a four-lane flyover aimed at replacing railway level crossings. The aim is to improve road connectivity and enhance commuter safety.
Nine projects completed across six districts
The infrastructure projects include road overbridges at Deepti Signal in Nagpur, Kirloskarvadi in Sangli, Badnera in Amravati and Morwa in Chandrapur. A four-lane flyover has also been opened at the Vardhmannagar railway crossing, along with several road under bridges and subways designed to improve traffic flow by eliminating level crossings.
The Deepti Signal Road Over Bridge in Nagpur hosted the main inauguration ceremony, while the remaining projects were launched virtually across the participating districts. According to MahaRail, the projects are expected to reduce waiting time at railway crossings and enable smoother movement of vehicles across key road corridors.
Projects executed under Center-state funding model
The projects have been developed through two funding mechanisms. Two projects in Nagpur were completed under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF), while the remaining seven were executed under a 50:50 cost-sharing arrangement between the Ministry of Railways and the Government of Maharashtra.
Besides improving traffic movement, the projects are expected to enhance road safety by separating rail and road traffic at busy crossings. According to MahaRail, the newly built subways have been equipped with advanced drainage systems to minimize waterlogging during the monsoon. Several road overbridges also feature integrated utility ducts for electrical and communication cables, simplifying future maintenance.
