Kochi Metro Phase 2 gains momentum: KMRL keeps August 2027 target

Kochi Metro Phase 2 is now targeting August 2027 for commissioning, as work continues on the 11.2 km corridor from JLN Stadium to Infopark via Kakkanad. The latest review by Kochi Metro Rail Limited assessed track work, stations, electrical systems, signaling and other key components. The project is expected to improve access to Kakkanad’s major employment hubs and strengthen public transport connections across eastern Kochi.

Kochi Metro Phase 2 is set to be commissioned in August 2027, following Kochi Metro Rail Limited’s review of the work needed to complete the Pink Line. The latest review covered track laying, station construction, electrical systems, lifts, escalators, signaling, telecommunications, and automatic fare collection. KMRL has also said civil work on the remaining stretches can move ahead as land acquisition on the right side of Palarivattom and Padamugal is completed.

The 11.2 km Phase 2 corridor will connect JLN Stadium with Infopark and SmartCity through Kakkanad. The project has faced delays linked to land handovers and utility shifting. Recent work has nevertheless reached several key milestones, including the arrival of the full rail consignment needed for track construction.

The Kochi Metro Phase 2 map shows that the metro will connect JLN Stadium in Kaloor with Infopark through Kakkanad. The elevated corridor will extend for about 11.2 km and have 11 stations. It will link the existing Kochi Metro network with residential, commercial, and employment areas in eastern Kochi.

The route will pass through Palarivattom, Alinchuvadu, Chembumukku, Vazhakkala and Padamugal before reaching Kakkanad. From there, the corridor will serve areas around Cochin Special Economic Zone, Chittethukara, KINFRA Park and Infopark. The JLN Stadium station will connect to the existing metro corridor, allowing passengers to travel between the new and existing sections of Kochi Metro.

The alignment is significant for Kakkanad because the area has developed into a major employment and business center. The Pink Line will provide a direct metro link between this eastern part of Kochi and the existing urban metro network.

Why has Kochi Metro Phase 2 been delayed?

Kochi Metro Phase 2 has faced delays mainly because construction is taking place through a densely developed urban corridor where land acquisition and utility shifting have to be completed before some civil works can move ahead. The Ernakulam district administration continued issuing land acquisition notifications for Phase 2 locations during 2026, including Palarivattom and Infopark.

Utility relocation has also affected construction at several points along the corridor. KSEB’s high-voltage infrastructure and underground power cables have restricted work in parts of the JLN Stadium to the Palarivattom section. KWA pipelines have also required relocation or changes to foundation plans.

Another challenge has been the Indian Oil Adani Gas pipeline near the Civil Lane section between Pipeline Junction and Padamugal. The pipeline was relocated in January 2026, after which piling and pier construction in that area was completed. These issues have affected the pace of work, but KMRL continues to maintain the revised August 2027 commissioning target.

Kochi Metro Phase 2 construction status and remaining work

Kochi Metro Phase 2 has moved into a stage where civil construction, track work and system installation are progressing alongside each other. KMRL reported in June that foundation work at station sites had been completed, while about 85 percent of viaduct piling was finished. Nearly 3.5 km of the superstructure had also been launched at that time.

A major track-related milestone followed in September 2026. The project received all 2,444 specialized steel rail pieces required for the 11.2 km corridor. The rails provide about 44 track km and will be installed in sections as the elevated structures are handed over. Texmaco Rail and Engineering is handling the track work.

The remaining work includes completing the viaduct, laying tracks and finishing stations. KMRL is also working on power supply, signaling, telecommunications, lifts, escalators and automatic fare collection systems. These works will need to be integrated and tested before the line can enter passenger service in Kochi.

When will Kochi Metro Phase 2 start operations?

Kochi Metro Phase 2 is currently targeted for commissioning in August 2027. KMRL reaffirmed this timeline during its latest review in October 2026. The agency is working toward completing the remaining civil works before moving through track installation, systems integration and testing.

The August 2027 date should be treated as a project target, rather than a confirmed passenger opening date. The line must complete the required construction, system checks and commissioning process before regular passenger services can begin. KMRL had earlier set a December 2025 target, which was later revised as land acquisition, utility shifting, and other project issues affected the schedule.

Which areas will benefit from Kochi Metro Phase 2?

Kochi Metro Phase 2 will improve the connection between central Ernakulam and the eastern part of Kochi. The corridor is planned to serve residential areas around Palarivattom, Chembumukku, Vazhakkala and Padamugal before reaching Kakkanad and its major employment centers. KMRL identifies Infopark, SmartCity, the district headquarters, CSEZ and KINFRA among the key destinations along the corridor.

Kakkanad is likely to be one of the most important areas served by the project. It is home to the Ernakulam district headquarters and several business and industrial centers. The corridor will also improve access to Infopark and SmartCity, which are major IT hubs in Kerala. The project also includes plans for integration with bus services, the Kochi Water Metro, and public bicycle sharing at suitable locations.

What does Kochi Metro Phase 2 mean for Real Estate?

The Kochi Metro Phase 2 corridor could influence housing and rental demand in areas connected to Kakkanad and the Infopark business district. The route links established residential locations with major employment centers, which may give residents more options when choosing where to live.

Kakkanad is the key market to watch because the corridor serves Infopark, SmartCity, CSEZ and KINFRA. According to the Kerala government’s Electronics & Information Technology Department Infopark currently has more than 400 companies and around 51,000 IT professionals, according to the Kerala government’s IT department.

The effect on property prices will depend on several factors, including station access, existing housing supply, road connectivity and demand from workers. Any rise in prices or rents should therefore be assessed using actual market transactions rather than treating the metro project alone as a guarantee of appreciation.

What Happens Next for Kochi Metro Phase 2?

The immediate focus for Kochi Metro Phase 2 is to complete the remaining civil work and make the corridor ready for track and systems installation. KMRL has said construction on the remaining stretches can move ahead once pending land acquisition at Palarivattom and Padamugal is completed. Track laying will then progress in sections as completed elevated structures are handed over. The project also has to complete signaling, power, telecommunications and station systems before integrated testing can begin. KMRL is continuing to work toward the August 2027 commissioning target for the full corridor. The next few months will therefore be important for land handovers, civil work and the transition to track and systems work.
