Mumbai Metro Line 7A: Route, real estate impact and latest updates

mumbai metro line 7a

Construction of Mumbai Metro Line 7A resumed in October 2026 after a height-clearance dispute near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport threatened to delay the project further. The 3.4-km corridor will extend the existing Red Line from Andheri East to the airport, with an elevated Airport Colony station and an underground interchange at the airport’s Terminal 2 area. By providing easier access to the airport, this project will benefit travellers and offer an alternative to road travel.

Mumbai Metro Line 7A project features

Line 7A is designed to extend the operational Metro Line 7 towards the airport, creating a direct metro connection between the western suburbs and Terminal 2. Its construction has faced a technical setback, but the latest restart offers a path towards resolving the issue without dismantling the affected viaduct.

Latest update

Construction resumed; formal AAI clearance awaited

The immediate challenge arose from a 2.5-metre height discrepancy involving overhead electrical wires near Vile Parle East. The issue put nearly 1 km of elevated viaduct, estimated to be worth around Rs 250 crore, at risk of demolition. The airport operator’s assessment has offered a way forward, although the final regulatory approval is still pending.

Connectivity benefits and travel-time impact of Mumbai Metro Line 7A

The corridor’s biggest advantage is the direct interchange it will create between the western suburbs’ Red Line network and the Aqua Line. Metro Line 7A extends Metro Line 7 from Andheri East towards CSMIA, while its underground station will connect passengers with Metro Line 3. The Aqua Line runs between Aarey JVLR and Cuffe Parade, passing through major destinations such as the airport and Bandra-Kurla Complex. This will give passengers a rail-based alternative to road journeys for reaching the airport and business districts in south Mumbai.

Passengers travelling from Dahisar, Mira-Bhayandar and other northern suburbs will benefit from the existing and expanding Red Line network, with interchange options towards Metro Line 2A and the Western Railway. Connections through Metro Line 7 also link the corridor to Metro Line 1 and Metro Line 6.

The Western Express Highway and Sahar Elevated Road already serve the airport area, but road journeys can be affected by congestion near airport approaches. Metro Line 7A will offer an alternative for passengers whose origins and destinations are close to the metro network.

Mumbai Metro Line 7A: Real estate impact across the airport corridor

Mumbai Metro Line 7A will change the accessibility of established neighbourhoods and strengthen the commercial role of areas already shaped by the airport. Vile Parle East combines established residential neighborhoods, educational institutions and older industrial properties. Better airport access could make the locality more convenient for residents who travel frequently for work, while also improving access for people employed at the airport. Existing industrial activity and the redevelopment of older industrial land could support changes in how parts of the locality are used.

Andheri East has established residential neighbourhoods around Chakala, Marol and nearby parts of the SEEPZ area, alongside offices and industrial estates. Metro Line 7A could make daily commutes easier for residents working at the airport, BKC and other business districts connected by the metro network. Better access to workplaces across Mumbai could also make the locality more practical for households with different commuting needs. The benefits will be strongest in residential pockets with convenient access to metro stations and feeder transport.

Sahar has residential areas alongside airport facilities, hotels and offices. Improved metro access could help residents reach workplaces across Mumbai more easily, particularly those employed in aviation, hospitality and related services. It could also make the area more convenient for households whose members travel frequently through the airport.

Airport Colony and the surrounding residential pockets could see more immediate benefits from the elevated station. Residents could travel to work and other parts of Mumbai more easily by metro instead of relying only on roads. Better access could also support neighborhood shops and everyday services as local travel becomes more convenient.
