Here’s taking a closer look at some of the wealthiest private residences in India and their famous owners.

India is no stranger to ultra-luxurious and extravagant homes, palatial, imposing and virtual fortresses for their gilded occupants. From unfathomably luxurious palaces and private residences to lavish bungalows in super-exclusive localities, India has it all. This is by no means a definitive list; it only showcases some of the most expensive private homes that deserve a mention.

  1. Antilia This one needs no introduction! India’s and possibly the world’s costliest home is the abode of India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani and his family, along with a gargantuan army of staff, a fabulous garage filled with hundreds of cars and what not! This 400,000 square feet palace in the air is located at one of the world’s poshest localities, Altamount Road in Mumbai and can take an earthquake with a magnitude of 8 on the Richter scale. The building has 27 storeys although the actual height goes till 40 storeys owing to the high ceilings. A staff team of 600 people are deployed for maintaining this one of a kind home. It comes with its own snow room, private motive theatre, ice-cream parlor, three helipads, a salon, swimming pool and a lot more. Antilia is pegged at more than a billion dollars in terms of its overall value. Some estimate its value at anywhere between Rs. 6,000-12,000 crore.
  2. Mannat Mannat is the labour of love of Shah Rukh Khan and his wife Gauri, along with their brood, staff members, offices, and other family members. Shah Rukh shifted here with his family back in the year 2001 and the mansion was renovated and enhanced over almost ten years. The interiors are as lavish as you can imagine and the main mansion is a Grade III 1920s heritage structure with a white façade and Neoclassical design. It has a six storied annex as well. There are multiple rooms and terraces along with sprawling lawns and gardens, elevators, entertainment zones, a cool personal office and library for SRK and a lot more. Mannat is valued at a minimum of Rs. 200-250 crore by industry experts.
  3. JK House – JK House is the architectural masterpiece in South Mumbai that is owned by industrialist Gautam Singhania. This Neo-Gothic styled building has its own private pools, spa, recreational area, gymnasium and a helipad as well. The 30 storied building is the country’s second-tallest residential tower after Antilia as per estimates. It covers 16,000 square feet with five floors for reserved parking areas. A museum and art gallery is also coming up soon as per reports. The value of JK House is estimated at approximately Rs. 6,000 crore.
  4. Jalsa – Amitabh Bachchan owns not just one but five bungalows in Mumbai. Out of these, his primary residence is the sprawling Jalsa bungalow. This famous two-storied structure was a gift from filmmaker Ramesh Sippy for the superstar’s role in Satte Pe Satta. The home is estimated to be worth at least Rs. 125-150 crore and covers approximately 10,123 square feet.

Jatia House Jatia House is the landmark property purchased by industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla and is a sprawling sea-facing mansion with its courtyard, huge garden, a pond and twenty bedrooms in all. The property is valued at Rs. 425 crore, which is the price KM Birla paid to acquire it in the year 2015. It has ceilings and wall cladding crafted from Burma teakwood and is one of the biggest marquee property deals in Mumbai over the last few years.
  6. Jindal House Sajjan Jindal purchased a three storied bungalow on the seafront for a whopping Rs. 400 crore sometime before KM Birla’s landmark acquisition of Jatia House. Sajjan Jindal has his dream home at Nepean Sea Road and the building was previously the Belgian Consulate.
  7. Jindal House – Jindal House in New Delhi is owned by Naveen Jindal and is estimated to be worth roughly Rs. 120-150 crore. It is a stunning and sprawling mansion located in the exclusive Lutyens Bungalow Zone of the National Capital.
  8. Ratan Tata’s Mansion Ratan Tata’s Colaba house offers a beautiful view of the Arabian Sea and sprawls over a whopping 15,000 square feet. The house spreads over seven levels with its own infinity pool on top and car parking areas for ten cars, a sun deck lounge, media room and another accompanying swimming pool.
  9. Ruia Bungalow – Ravi Ruia is the owner of the Essar Group and the owner of one of the most luxurious bungalows in New Delhi that covers a whopping 2.24 acres. The bungalow is worth a staggering Rs. 100 crore as per several estimates.
  10. Lincoln House – Lincoln House is the seafront mansion which was earlier owned by an Indian royal and then by the U.S. Government. It was sold for a landmark Rs.750 crore to industrialist Cyrus Poonawalla. The mansion sprawls over 50,000 square feet and is a heritage structure located in South Mumbai.
  11. Radhakishan Damani’s House – Radhakishan Damani the founder of DMart and legendary stockbroker, recently purchased a sprawling bungalow on South Mumbai’s Narayan Dabholkar Road for a whopping Rs. 1,001 crore, in what happens to be India’s largest ever transaction for any residential property. He bought this G+1 bungalow with his brother in one of the country’s most exclusive locations. It covers 1.5 acres with 60,000 square feet of built-up area in the ultra-prime Malabar Hill location. The art deco design is a major draw of this bungalow which is reportedly 90 years old. Damani forked out Rs. 30 crore as stamp duty for the property, going by reports and it was previously owned by the Mumbai-based Premchand Roychand family which developed the Venetian Gothic Rajabai Clock Tower in the mid-19th century at the Fort area.   12. New Godrej Bungalow – While Adi Godrej already lives in a luxurious home in Mumbai with his family, the family purchased the famous Mehrangir bungalow of Homi Bhabha in Malabar Hill for a staggering amount of Rs. 372 crore in the year 2014.
  13. Gautam Adani’s Delhi Bungalow – Gautam Adani of the Adani Group made news earlier when he purchased Aditya Estates in Lutyens’ Delhi for Rs. 400 crore. The property covers a whopping 3.4 acres in the Lutyens’ Bungalow Zone and encompasses 25,000 square feet in total. It has seven bedrooms along with six living and dining rooms, a 7,000 square feet allocation for staff quarters, a study zone and spectacular greenery and trees all around.
  14. Lakshmi Mittal’s House – Lakshmi Mittal already lives in one of the United Kingdom’s swankiest mansions. However, he also owns a lavish bungalow in New Delhi’s Lutyens’ Bungalow Area and bought it for an estimated Rs. 31 crore in the year 2005. It should easily be worth three times of the amount by now!
  15. Sunil Vachani’s Bungalow – Sunil Vachani, the Managing Director & Chairman at Dixon Technologies, purchased a luxurious bungalow at Lutyens’ Delhi for a sum of Rs. 170 crore.
