Kalimpong was once a subdivision of Darjeeling. Now it’s a separate district, under the PIN code 734301. It’s about 55 km from Darjeeling town, but the feel is completely different. It is quieter and less crowded, and the pace slows the moment you get there.
There are clear views of the Kanchenjunga range, long green stretches, and open spaces around places like Deolo Hill. It doesn’t try to match the rush of tourist-heavy spots. It feels settled and lived-in.

Getting to Kalimpong is straightforward once you know the route. Most people come in via Bagdogra airport, which is about 79 km away. From there, you’ll find taxis waiting outside
If you’re travelling by train, New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the closest major station. After that, it’s a road trip into the hills. Road conditions have been getting better. Work on NH-10, especially the Sevoke–Rangpo stretch, is meant to make the drive safer. NH-717A is also being developed alongside it. Another route being discussed is Bagrakote to Gorubathan to Lava. If that comes through properly, it should ease some of the traffic pressure.
Inside Kalimpong and nearby areas, shared jeeps and taxis are the most common. That’s pretty much how people move around here. A drive from Darjeeling usually takes about 2 to 2.5 hours. In the hills, that’s normal. There’s also a rail project, the Sevoke-Rangpo line, in work. It’s expected to be completed in 2027.
