Khadki is known as the base of the Indian army. It has 2 ordinance factories, 2 ammunition factories, and military vehicle depot, and an army dairy firm. It was earlier known as Kirkee during British rule. 2 army establishments now surround it. One is a College of Military Engineering, popularly known as CME, and the other is Bombay Engineering Group. There is also the Kirkee war cemetery and war memorial situated in it.

This is India's richest cantonment and the world's largest one if combined with the Pune cantonment. Its entire area comes under the green zone and plays a crucial role in controlling the city's pollution level that is green, and quiet. For many years, the name of this city i.e. Khadki has been confusing. In 1817, the historic battle of Khadki, also known as the Battle of Kirkee was fought between the Maratha Army led by Peshwa Bajirao 2 and the East India Company's army led by Col Burr and Capt Ford. The East India Company won the battle, and Khadki was renamed Kirkee as the name Khadki was challenging to pronounce to them. Even post-independence, the authorities chose to continue with the name Kirkee. Subsequently, after many years the original name "Khadki" was restored and was resolved to be used as and in all official communication between the army and the cantonment authorities.

The transportation infrastructure is not so good due to bad road and street conditions in some places e.g. potholes, uneven road surface, long due for repairs, lack of street lights, and two-way traffic on highways.

There has always been a demand for the development of infrastructure. Lately, some growth and development work has been seen in Khadki. The construction of multi-lane roads is in consideration. The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited has also stated its hope to pick up the pace on raising 17 of 35 Metro piers along the old Pune-Mumbai stretch from Khadki railway gate to all saints high school.
