Home to numerous old temples and structures, the town enjoys great historical value due to its strategic positioning near the river .The fertile land around Nira has made farming and agriculture a central trade of the residents of this locality. Like several other parts of Pune, sugarcane and rice cultivation takes place on a big scale in this locality as well.

For those living in Nira, it's a balanced mix of traditional and modern lifestyles. While the town holds onto its cultural roots and values, it also recognizes the need for growth and modernization. Several local attractions near Nira and Pune serve as attractive getaway destinations for the people living in this area.

The Pilgrimage City of Jejuri

The city of Jejuri is known for its cultural and religious significance. It holds immense significance for devotees and believers as it houses numerous revered temples. The Khandoba Temple is one of its most famous attractions where Lord Khandoba is dearly worshipped. During the Bhandara festival, Jejuri is bathed with turmeric that’s thrown into the air by devotees. The golden hues across the city give it the name, ‘Golden Jejuri’. The city is only half an hour away from Nira and offers lively cultural experiences.

Shreemant Dagdusheth Halwai Mandir

The iconic Shreemant Dagdusheth Halwai Mandir is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Thousands of devotees flock to the temple to offer their prayers and receive the almighty’s blessings. The gold-laden and captivating idol of Lord Ganesha inside the temple makes an ever-lasting impression on everyone visiting the temple. Although the temple is in mainland Pune and is a little distant from Nira, it offers an unforgettable spiritual outing.

Bhuleshwar Temple

The old, rusty and ageing Bhuleshwar Temple dates back to the 13th century. What’s interesting about this temple is that it is a Shiva temple that boasts an Indo-Islamic architecture. It's also famed for a unique phenomenon: from the main entrance, the deity appears as a bull (Nandi), but once you enter and look back, the image transforms into a Shiva Linga. The temple opens from 5 in the morning till 8 in the evening and is about an hour’s drive from Nira.

Ajinkya Fort

Standing on the Sahyadri mountain range, the Ajinkya Fort offers panoramic views of the entire Satara city and the confluence of rivers Krishna and Venna. Also known as Ajinkyatra Fort, its strategic positioning made it one of the most important fortresses of the Deccan region. Although built by Raja Bhoj II of the Shilahara dynasty in the 12th century, it finally gained prominence during the reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Residents from Nira can take a day out and explore the remnants of this iconic structure with their friends and family.

Shaniwar Wada

The royal seat of Maharashtra’s Peshwa rulers is also a famous nearby attraction. Built in 1732, the fortification witnessed countless tales of the Marathi reign. The palace’s grand gate and towering structure today act as a striking backdrop in pictures of tourists from various parts of the country. Although a little far off from Nira, a visit to this glorious landmark is definitely worth it!

Locality Comparison

Life in Nira is a little more laid-back than its urban counterparts. People engage mainly in agricultural activities and day-to-day trades. Sound road connectivity and close proximity to Pune lend strategic advantages to this area in comparison to its neighbouring localities. Nearby areas like Jejhuri, Lonand and Phaltan offer their own unique advantages. Like Nira, but more so, Jejuri is a religious centre. Lonand, although shares a similar agrarian background, is commercially more active than Nira. Phaltan, on the other hand, is an altogether larger and more developed area. What works to Nira’s advantage is that it can sustain a good standard of living on its own and provide ready access to all these areas as well.
