About Chandannagar

  is an upcoming residential locality that is located 50 km north of . It is a historically significant area since it used to be a French colony before the independence of India. Chandannagar lies on the western bank of the Hooghly river. As per the census conducted in 2011, the city has a population of 166,867 with an almost equal ratio of males and females. The average literacy rate is 89.66%. 

The development of Chandannagar is being undertaken by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). What used to be a quiet, less populated small town area is now emerging to be a hotspot for important residential projects such as Gangetica by Primarc and Sabuj Swapno by Sanuka Group. 

The locality, which the Mughals and the French once ruled, is rich in history. It consists of historical monuments with colonial architecture. The area is well-connected to the railway network, with Howrah station being the closest to Chandannagar railway station. 

As far as amenities are concerned, except for the basic amenities, the locality does not possess infrastructure or amenities like those of metropolitan cities. There is a presence of local retail outlets, schools, basic healthcare facilities, and a few employment zones. Most of the major companies that offer employment can be accessed by the Howrah station.

  • Lack of metropolitan culture and lifestyle.

  • Major employment sectors are distant from the locality.

  • Does not have quick access to the airport.

  • Groceries, local shops, and vegetables are not nearby residential properties.

  • Bus services are accessed only through GT road.

  • Lack of standard hospital services.

Social Infrastructure: 

Being a French colony, the locality is rich in cultural heritage. The society is progressive and has a mix of both Bengali and French cultures. The place is home to many historical monuments, museums, temples, churches, and mosques. Due to its safety, the place is most preferred to live in by retirees. 

Shopping Complex and Markets:

The locality has shopping malls that have well-known clothing brands. The fast-food here is limited by lack of availability of international fast-food chains like McDonalds, KFC, etc.; the food market is popular here, especially sweets. Chandannagar is famous for its street-side food outlets, which tourists throng for their delicacies like fish curry, biryani, and momos. 

Health Care Centers:

Although there is a lack of big hospitals and advanced healthcare systems in the area, there are many clinics, nursing homes, and diagnostic centers. The Chandannagar Subdivisional Hospital is a government institution that offers free treatment for citizens. Amongst the few specialized hospitals, there is Gala Kuthi Cancer Hospital which has a 5-star rating given by visitors on Google. 

Connectivity & Public Transport:

Chandannagar is connected to Kolkata by both land and water. One can use the buses provided by the West Bengal Corporation Transport Corporation that travels twice a day to Kolkata. Besides that, many private buses offer services to commute to Kolkata. If using the railway, one can connect to Kolkata by the nearest Howrah station. Ferries that travel across the Hooghly river also provide easy commuting between Chandannagar, Kolkata, and Belur.

Schools, Banks, & Fitness Centers:

Chandannagar is known for good schools that have notable alumni like Sabyasachi Mukherjee. Both English-medium and Bengali-medium schools are prominent in the locality, following WBBSE and WBCHSE curriculum. St. Josephs Convent School for girls and Sri Aurobindo Vidyamandir for boys is popular in the locality. All major national banks such as SBI, Canara, IndusInd, and ICICI have their services operating in the locality. There are many fitness centers and gyms catering to both men and women, such as Terminator Gym, Elite Fitness, and Ladies Multi-gym.

Popular Landmarks near Locality:

Besides historical landmarks such as Sohid Bedi, Statue of Swami Vivekananda, Tomb of Susanna Anna Maria, the locality is also home to heritage sites such as Nandadulal Temple and Radhakanta Temple. There are monuments such as Clock Tower and Old Dutch Cemetary that reflects the French colonial architecture. Hooghly Imambara is a Shia Muslim prayer hall that was constructed in the 19th century beside the Ganges river. The Strand is a good place to walk during winters and enjoy the popular street food while witnessing French architecture.
