Ramanagara is a locality in Bengaluru, Ramanagara district. It's located approximately 50km from Bengaluru city and is also the official headquarters of Ramanagara district. The hills around the city have been well known over the years for being among the many locations where the film Sholay was filmed in 1975. These hills have, as a result, been nicknamed the Sholay Hills. 

Ramanagara district was part of the Bengaluru Rural district until 2007, after which it was demarcated as a district of its own. The city is most known for its sericulture industry and has, as a result, also been called the Silk Town and Silk City.

Another popular tourist attraction here is the Shola Shooting Hill Top, where a part of the film Sholay was shot for almost two and a half years. These hills and jungles were the hideouts for the character of Gabbar. 

One can also visit the Ramanagara Silk Cocoon Market, Asia's largest cocoon market. This market sells almost 50,000kg of cocoon every day. 

Last but not least, tourists can also enjoy activities like camping and night treks in the hills surrounding Ramanagara via various camps dotted around the area.
