South Goa is one of Goa’s two primary districts and lies within the Konkan Region. It is surrounded by Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district, North Goa and the Arabian Sea to its east & south, north and west respectively. The census of 2011 indicated a population of 639, 962 in South Goa. South Goa is a major hotspot for tourists and is famous for several soothing and beautiful beaches such as the Butterfly Beach, Palolem Beach and Majorda Beach. South Goa is known for its throbbing and vibrant nightlife and attractions like the Tiswadi Island.South Goa is also known for major landmarks like the Dudhsagar Waterfalls which is one of the most breathtaking natural attractions in Goa and the Bhagvan Mahavir Sanctuary. The Kesarval Spring is another attraction and is believed to have medicinal benefits while there is a center for Art, Culture & Environment at Loutolim which is only 9 kilometres from Margao. The Natural Harmony is also India’s longest laterite monolithic sculpture. Margao is the administrative headquarters of South Goa and the district has five subdivisions, namely Margao, Mormugao (Vasco Da Gama), Ponda, Quepem and Dharbandora. There are 7 taluks, namely Quepem, Mormugao, Ponda, Sanguem, Dharbandora, Salcete and Canacona.Goa is the smallest state in India with regard to area and is also the richest state in the country with the highest GDP per capita. Goa is located in the Konkan region on the south western coast of the country. The Western Ghats comprise of a major part of eastern Goa and has been classified as a leading global biodiversity site. Vasco Da Gama in South Goa is the largest city in the State. Tourism is the largest industry in the state and it attracts a large number of foreign tourists annually.
