Chennai Metro Phase II: Poonamallee Bypass-Vadapalani Stretch to Open in February

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is set to launch passenger services on the 15.8 km corridor between Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani in February as part of its Phase II rollout plan.This phased opening aims to provide commuters with earlier access to the network and integrate seamlessly with the existing Phase I stations. The new stretch is expected to improve east-west connectivity and reduce traffic congestion.

Residents have complained about debris from the Chennai Port-Maduravoyal Elevated Corridor Project being dumped in the Cooum river, reducing its width and increasing flood risk in areas like Egmore, Chintadripet, and Anna Nagar. The width of the river has been reduced to around 30 meters at several locations, while engineers suggest a minimum width of 70 meters is needed to prevent flooding during the monsoon.

The projects included a high-level bridge across the Cooum river near Maduravoyal, an indoor stadium at Nandanam, and projects completed by the CMDA at Pavendar Bharathidasan playfield in Shenoy Nagar, the eco park at Koyambedu roundabout, an open area park at Ramapuram, a sports ground at Pammal, beautification works and the library at Mint Street.
