Indian Government Launches ‘Floodwatch’ App For Real-Time Flood Monitoring

Indian Government Launches Floodwatch App for Flood Forecasts

With a growing number of flood incidents causing harm to both lives and assets across the nation, the Indian authorities unveiled a new mobile application on Thursday, August 17, that will offer live updates about flood situations in impacted regions.

Named ‘FloodWatch’, this innovative app aggregates data from over 300 monitoring stations, providing immediate flood notifications to 23 states and Union Territories, as reported by the head of the Central Water Commission (CWC), Kushvinder Vohra.

The app has been designed to leverage smartphones to disseminate flood-related news. According to the reports, the ‘FloodWatch’ app can also forecast flood patterns up to a week in advance, shared Vohra during its launch.

Empowered by cutting-edge tools such as satellite imagery interpretation, advanced computational models, and immediate surveillance, this app promises precision and promptness in its flood predictions.

“Its intuitive design ensures that users, regardless of their tech-savviness, can remain updated and take necessary precautions during flood crises,” emphasized Vohra.

Moreover, ‘FloodWatch’ will broadcast alerts and predictions in both text and audio forms, the head of CWC confirmed.

While the app currently offers alerts in English and Hindi, plans are underway to introduce more regional languages, added Vohra. This will completely change the dynamics of safety and security for the locals.

Interestingly, this app, a CWC brainchild, has yet to link up with flood-affected regions in Himachal Pradesh. However, Vohra reassured that this integration will materialize within the next half-year.”
