MMRC Establishes Biogas Plant to Illuminate Iconic Mumbai Market Precinct

In a bid to promote eco-friendly practices and sustainable development, the Mumbai Metro Railway Corporation (MMRC) has announced the establishment of a biogas plant. This biogas plant will play a pivotal role in illuminating the LT Market at Grant Road East, with the clean energy it generates. As part of the ambitious Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro-3 Corridor project, which is focused on urban redevelopment and environmentally sound practices, this initiative is a significant step forward.

Collaboration with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)

The MMRC is working in collaboration with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to implement this unique project. The organic wet waste, collected by the BMC from various sources such as hotels, restaurants, banquet halls, and municipal markets, will be utilized by the biogas plant. This will help to not only manage the waste effectively but also contribute to the production of clean and green energy.

Key Features of the Biogas Plant

The biogas plant being established as part of this project will have a capacity of 1.5 tonnes per day (TPD) for bio-methanation. This means that it will be capable of processing 1,000 tonnes of wet waste daily. The extracted biogas will then be utilized to generate approximately 80-100 kWh of green energy per hour.

Cost and Execution

The total estimated cost of this groundbreaking project is Rs 74.61 lakh. Aerocare Aviation Services has been awarded the contract and will be responsible for carrying out the work. With their expertise, it is expected that the project will be executed efficiently and within the designated timeframe.

Benefits and Impact

The establishment of this biogas plant is expected to have several long-lasting benefits and a significant impact. Firstly, by utilizing organic wet waste, the plant will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, eventually leading to a greener environment. Additionally, the production of clean energy and its utilization in illuminating the LT Market at Grant Road East showcases the commitment of MMC towards sustainable development and energy conservation. Furthermore, this innovative initiative will significantly lower the transportation cost associated with waste disposal. By processing waste locally and utilizing it on-site, the need for long-distance transportation of waste will be eliminated, subsequently reducing both costs and carbon footprint.

Towards a More Sustainable Mumbai

The establishment of this biogas plant by the Mumbai Metro Railway Corporation marks another step towards a more sustainable future for the city. By incorporating environmentally friendly practices and promoting the utilization of renewable energy sources, the MMRC is setting an example for other developmental projects. Through collaboration with the BMC, this project aims to demonstrate that effective waste management can coexist with urban redevelopment. As the initiative for the underground Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro-3 Corridor progresses, Mumbai’s growth will be assisted by sustainable practices, further cementing its reputation as a city with a vision for a greener tomorrow.
