Experience with East-West Kolkata Metro Station

Kolkata East West Metro

The Kolkata Metro is a mass rapid transit, with 40 metro stations as of December 30, 2022. What’s interesting is that the Kolkata Metro Railway is the first metro line in India. It was started as early as 1969, with the master plan prepared in 1971. There were three North-South corridors that were chosen for a 97.5-km-long network plan. The authorities then conducted traffic studies on three lines, i.e. Dumdum – Tollygunge, Bidhannager – Ramrajatala and Dakshineswar – Thakurpukur. On December 29, 1972, Dumdum-Tollygunge was chosen for execution, and the authorities finished work on this line. This first stretch was finished on October 24, 1984.

The Esplanade and Bhowanipur metro line, which is also the first metro line, was about 3.4 km long. By 2010, the corridor was expanded to the New Garia. Over the years, the metro authorities added several new extensions and stretches, increasing the connectivity of the metro services. The East-West Kolkata Metro Line was sanctioned on July 30, 2008, connecting Howrah Railway Station and Bidhannagar.
