Documents Required for a Passport

A passport is a document issued by the national government to the country’s residents. It encompasses all the necessary details of a person, including the name, birth date, gender, place of birth and address.

Like for driving a car, you need a driving license, in the same manner, you need a passport for travelling to other countries. Allowing you to explore and travel to the neck of the woods under the country’s protection, the need for a passport becomes extremely important. 

Documents Required for Fresh Passport

  • A voter ID card
  • A rent agreement
  • The candidate’s Aadhaar card
  • Electricity bill
  • The candidate’s driving license
  • The PAN card of the candidate 
  • The candidate’s income tax assessment statement
  • The school leaving certificate of the individual candidate
  • The candidate’s birth certificate, which is  issued by the municipal corporation. 
  • The proof of gas connection
  • The postpaid phone bill or the landline
  • A photo of the passbook you use for your current bank account. Your bank can be a private, public or even a regional rural bank.
  • The copy of the spouse’s passport – the first and last page of the passport (this includes the details of the family and the name of the applicant)
  • The certificate from the employer with the letterhead. 
  • The policy bond issued by the public life insurance corporations/companies 

Documents Required for Minor’s Fresh Passport

  • The Candidate’s PAN card
  • The birth certificate of the candidate 
  • e-Aadhar or digital Aadhar card of the candidate 
  • The original and self-attested copies of the parent’s passport should also be carried. 
  • The secondary school leaving certificate      
  • The proof of the current address, issued in the parent’s name
  • Mark sheet of the 10th standard. 
  • The photo passbook of your current bank account. The bank can be a private, public or even regional rural bank. 
  • The Policy bond issued by the Public Life Insurance Companies and Corporations

Passport Documents Required for the Reissue of a Passport

  • Old original passport of the candidate 

Self-Attested Copy of

  • If there are any, then attach the page of validity extension 
  • The first and last two pages 
  • The Non-ECR or the ECR page 
  • The Prior Intimation Letter (PI) or the No Objection Certificate (NOC)
  • If any page of observation is made by the passport issuing authority

It is also important to note that all the original documents required for a passport must be submitted at the time of issuing the passport at the counter. This would be returned just after the verification.

There can be multiple reasons why a passport might need re-issuing:

Mandatory Documents Include:

  1. Proof of the place of birth
  2. Order from the sub-divisional magistrate (civil court) or first class judicial magistrate. This happens when there is a change in the date of birth that exceeds two years or if there are contrasting documents. The certificate of citizenship that is issued by MHA, the place of birth, involves a change in country. 
  • Change in Parents Name:

The important documents include: 

  1. Parents’ passport with the new name 
  2. Any document that verifies the name change while the parents were alive. This implies when they are dead. 
  3. Pension order or service records or any other document that involves changing the name of their parents. 
  • Due to Change of Sex:

These include the following documents

  1. A certificate that proves the sex change of the applicant 
  2. An affidavit that verifies the change of sex

Due to the exhaustion of pages or validity expiration, change in appearance, addition or change in the spouse’s name, change in signature, or any reason apart from the above-mentioned ones: 

  • Mandatory documents that prove the identification of the applicant

How to Check Diplomatic/Official Passport Application Status?

  • The official and diplomatic passports are issued to the candidates who hold diplomatic status or are designated by the Indian government for any official responsibility abroad. 
  • Normally, an application that is issued in the interests of a diplomat or officials is taken care of by the PSP Division, Patiala house. Although, you are eligible to choose to apply at the passport office adjacent to your current address.
