south delhi muncipal corporation

When the prior Municipal Corporation of Delhi was divided into three parts, South Delhi Municipal Corporation was one of them. It is also one of the five local bodies in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, the others being North Delhi, East Delhi, West Delhi Municipal Corporation. Before the division of the body, the Delhi Municipal Corporation was one of the largest municipal bodies to serve the basic civic needs and amenities.

The South Delhi Municipal corporation has been serving a population of approximately 56 Lac citizens, staying true to their responsibilities of supervising, developing, and advancing public amenities competently to create a vision of a better tomorrow for the public of Delhi. All these details and responsibilities are laid down well on their official website.

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation is spread over an area of 656.91 sq. km. This is further divided into four zones including the Central, South, West, and Najafgarh zone which comprises 104 wards.

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation makes sure to serve the variant segments and parts of the district including the posh inhabitants to the people coming from the urban villages and colonies. They also keep hold of all the statistics of the region/area they are responsible for.

According to the SDMC, there are:

  1. 388 approved colonies
  2. 86 rural villages
  3. 111 Unauthorized colonies
  4. 252 unauthorized regularized colonies
  5. 32 Resettlement Colonies.

Other than that, some miscellaneous responsibilities come under the SDMC. Recently the South Delhi Municipal Corporation took the initiative to commence a waste to wonder park near Rajiv Gandhi Samriti Van at Kale Khan. This initiative exhibits the wonders of the world made from industrial waste. The body also took the gumption of constructing a Shanti Stupa near the Indraprastha park, which is a beautiful facsimile of the original Shanti Stupa in Ladakh.

The SDMC takes charge of many initiatives and steps, which in turn regulate their functions and come under the services that they provide. These functions also tend to include the schemes and yojana that the Government puts forth for the betterment of the country. • The sewage disposal system has also been taken into consideration while making the prototype of these toilets. These toilets are also easily accessible and can be located on google maps for the citizens.

 Decentralizing the Composting:

  • An initiative to lessen the wet waste volume that is being sent to the landfill site, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation has set up a method of upcycling waste via using aerobic brick composting pits.
  • These pits are being placed at various locations including all four zones. Now, for an initiative like this and to make it come to a success rate of 100%, segregating the source and processing the wet waste onsite, SDMC has taken up the inaugural step of setting up 508 brick compost and wire mesh roundel compost pits.
  • This step is taken up at various levels and is practiced by various user groups. Home composting is done at the household level, Bulk waste generators like hotels, institutions, etc do it on that level.
  • Collection of substantial wet waste and processing them into usable and organic compost at the local facilities.

The compost produced by the SDMC is distributed free of cost to the residents and in exchange, they promote source separation of municipal solid waste. Shortly, SDMC is planning to promote and build more decentralizing composting facilities to increase the daily volume of compost at the local level.

Dhalaos Beautification Initiatives:

  • SDMC took the initiative of making the walls and the existing dhalaos more intriguing in terms of beautification.
  • Wall paintings and murals are being painted on the walls, dhalaos, dustbins, community, and public toilets.
  • The wall paintings give out a message in the form of a slogan, encouraging a “Swachh Bharat”. The Slogan also carries the obligation to keep the importance of waste segregation and management, cleanliness, air pollution, etc. in check.

All of this is a step towards creating awareness in all inhabitants about keeping the city and our homes clean and healthy. All of this has taken a front seat after the Covid-19 virus hit the country.

IEC Activities:

Many IEC activities take place regularly on the various zonal levels to educate and aware the residents about hygiene, cleanliness, and waste management. There are many NGOs and RWAs that contribute to the same to bring out the best in the surroundings and maintain them. Some of these activities are listed below:

  • Many door-to-door campaigns are run by playing the famous and the new song (or as they call it the “morning jingle”- to which almost all of us wake up), which guarantees 100% segregation of waste and spreading awareness and execution of the above message.
  • The SMDC area supervisor and zonal officers make sure to interact, be aware, and sensitize people about waste management and segregation, home composting and other composting techniques, and most importantly, Swachh Sarvekshan 2021.
