100 ΓΈre forms one NOK. Krones are issued in the form of coins and banknotes. While coins have denominations of 1, 5, 10, and 20 Krones, banknotes are categorised into 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1,000 denominations.Β

In April 2010, the Krone was the thirteenth most traded currency globally by value. It went down three positions from 2007.Β

History of NOK(Norwegian Krone)

Norwegian Krone started circulating in the country for the first time in 1875. It replaced theΒ speciedaler. Earlier, four Kroner used to form one speciedaler. Following the switch, Norway shook hands with Scandinavian Monetary Union and formed an alliance that continued until the outburst of World War I.Β

At the time, the Norwegian Krone served as the gold standard. One kilogram of gold would amount to 2,480 Kroner. However, in 1931, the use of the NOK as a gold standard ended.Β

In 1939, NOK was pegged to the USD (U.S. Dollar). Nevertheless, the currency was pegged to Reichsmark during the German occupation of Norway at the time of World War II. Nonetheless, the currency was pegged to GBP (the British Pound) at the war’s end.

Later, Sultan Sher Shah Suri, during his five-year reign from 1540 to 1545, issued the silver coin of weight 178 grains (or 11.53 grams). This coin was called the Rupiya.Β

The new symbol of Rupee β€œβ‚Ήβ€ was officially adopted in 2010.Β
