Since the government has made it compulsory for citizens to link their PAN card to Aadhaar Card, many individuals have been compelled to cancel their PAN cards. The process for cancelling the PAN card can be done offline and online.

How to Download PAN Card Cancellation Form Online?

Any individual wishing to cancel a PAN card in their name must obtain the PAN Card Cancellation form. The applicant must use the same form for a new PAN card application or make changes in existing PAN details, Form 49A. This form can be obtained online as well as offline. The applicant will first be required to visit the NSDL website.

Next, the applicant must click on the ‘Apply for PAN Online Option’. This will redirect you to a new page where you must submit all the details.

How to Cancel PAN Card Online and Offline

1.   Online Process

Given below are the steps for online PAN card cancellation on the NSDL website:

Step 1: Go to the online TIN-NSDL portal.

Step 2: Click on ‘PAN’ under the ‘Services’ drop-down menu.

Step 3: Click on the ‘Apply’ option under the ‘Change/Correction in PAN Data’ section.

Step 4: Click on the ‘ Changes and Correction in existing PAN Data / Reprint of PAN Card (No changes in existing PAN Data)’ from the ‘Application Type’ drop-down.

Step 5: Select ‘Individual’ from the category drop-down.

Step 6: Enter all the relevant details, verify the captcha, and click on the ‘Submit’ button.

Step 7: Once the details have been submitted successfully, a token number will be generated and sent to the registered email address.

Step 8: Click on ‘Continue’ on the next page to continue the application form.

Step 9: On the resulting page, you are required to submit the PAN documents through e-KYC using your Aadhaar details.

Step 10: Scan the required documents and submit the files through e-sign. You will be required to mention all the documents you have provided to support your PAN card application. Click on ‘Submit’ to proceed.

Step 11: This will redirect you to the payment portal; the payment can be made via cheque/demand draft/debit card/credit card/net banking. Once the payment has been made, the transaction details will be displayed on the screen.

Step 12: You will now be required to authenticate your Aadhaar card by ticking the box and clicking the ‘Authenticate’ button.

Step 13: Once the Aadhaar card details have been authenticated, click on ‘Continue with e-Sign/e-KYC’ to generate the One Time Password. Enter the OTP and click on ‘Submit’.

Step 14: This will redirect you to a page where you can see the preview of the application form.

Take a printout of this application form, attach it with all necessary documents and two recent passport size photographs and send it to the address given below:

2.   Offline Process

If the assessee wishes to cancel the PAN card, they can submit Form 49A at the nearest TIN facilitation centre. Further, the applicant can also write an application to the assessing officer mentioning all the details given below:

  • Name of the individual.
  • Address of the individual.
  • Details of the PAN card which is being cancelled.
  • Details of the PAN card that needs to be retained.

Please note that the assessee should have a copy of the acknowledgement letter. This letter proves to the PAN authorities that the PAN card has been cancelled.

How to Track PAN Cancellation Status?

The PAN cancellation status can be tracked online once the application has been processed. Below are the steps to track the PAN cancellation status:

Step 1: Visit the official income tax e-filing portal.

Step 2: Click on the option ‘Know Your PAN/TAN/AO’ under the ‘Quick Links’ tab.

Step 3: Enter all the required details like full name, date of birth, gender, mobile number, etc. and click on the ‘Submit’ button.

Step 4: This will trigger an OTP sent to the registered phone number.

Step 5: Enter the OTP and click on the ‘Validate’ button.

Step 6: The PAN card status will display on the screen.

Note: If an applicant wants to know the cancellation status of multiple cards, they might be required to provide additional information.

PAN Card Cancellation Reasons

If any individual has more than one PAN card, they can incur heavy penalties. Such an individual is required to surrender the additional PAN card. Some of the other reasons an assessee may be required to cancel their PAN are as given below:

  • The income tax authorities have issued multiple individual PAN.
  • Given below are some of the reasons that the individual may have been issued multiple PAN:

○ If the assessee has made multiple PAN card applications. This means that multiple PAN has been allotted against the applicant’s name.

○ It can be a clerical error from the income tax authorities.

  • The PAN needs to be cancelled due to an error in PAN card details.
