The Ministry of External Affairs has decided to hike the charges imposed on Passport fees and related services fees. Earlier the amount was Rs. 1000, which increased by Rs. 500 more. Currently, the final passport fee is Rs. 1500 for regular categories. Similarly, the tatkal amount increased from Rs. 2500 to Rs. 3500 with a hike of Rs. 1000.  

Indian citizens living overseas have to switch from $40 to $75 and Euro 60 from Euro 48 as their new passport application fees. 

As per the government statement, the new charges are applied due to the recurring rise of inputs in the last 10 years. These were capital expenditure, reimbursement, establishment, passport book printing, IT expenses, and the contractual payment made for the services provided. The last amendment to Passport fees was made on 29 March 2002. In 1993, the Central Government of India decided to restructure the passport fees per the required expense ratio. The regime first underwent changes in the same year over the 1992 policies. 

How to Pay Passport Fees?

As aforementioned, the new guidelines only allow online payments for passport purposes: Regular or Tatkal fees. There are certain mediums through which purposes like passport renewal fees, new passport fees, and more: 

  • SBI- Wallet payment

  • Debit or Credit Card

Points to Remember while Making Passport Fees Payment

  • Debit or credit cards of Master and Visa are only acceptable. 
  • Passport Seva Kendra must have an online payment receipt to process further to book an appointment.
  • Banks charge 1.5% of the total payment and the tax deductions on debit and credit card payments. 
  • While paying Tatkal Passport, only the basic amount must be paid online. The Balance amount will only be submitted in cash at the Passport Office’s counter.
  • The passport application must be accepted for tatkal passport fees. Otherwise, the service may not be available on an instant basis.
  • A passport application has to be raised within 12 months of the first appointment to validate the initial online payment. If the deadline crosses, the amount paid will be fortified and repeated by the applicant.
