Maruti Suzuki Company Information

Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), earlier known as Maruti Udyog Limited, is a subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Corporation of Japan. Maruti Suzuki is now India’s largest passenger car company accounting for over 50% of the Indian car market. Maruti Udyog Limited originated back in 1981 under the requirements of the Indian Company Act 1956 and the government of India selected Suzuki Motor Corporation as the joint venture partner for the company. 

Suzuki signed a JV with the Government of India in 1982. Born as a government company, Suzuki was a minor partner that made cars for the middle-class society of India, who desired to own a car for their families. Over the years, the requirements have changed and ownerships modified. Initially, the company was only importing cars. 

It was not long ago when the Indian society was awarded India’s first affordable car – the Maruti 800, a car with a 796 cc hatchback also making the record for going into production in just 13 months. Since the beginning, the company has sold over 7.5 million cars in India, and almost 50,000 units are exported to Europe and other parts of the world annually. Maruti van was the second car Maruti Suzuki came with followed by a Gypsy based on the SJ410. In 1989, Maruti Alto was introduced which led the company to export cars to the West in 1987. 

In 1992, the stakes in Suzuki were increased by 50% and it became a 50-50 joint venture. Cars like Esteem, Maruti Zen and the Maruti Omni in 1996 which can still be spotted on the streets were introduced to society. In 2000, the company started a call centre in order to improve and enhance internal and customer services not just by stores but personally. Since its genesis in 1983, Maruti Udyog Limited has faced issues with the labour force, the Indian workers have adopted the work culture of Japanese and modern manufacturing techniques. In 2000, in order to get their pay revised the workers went on strike in demand of better pay.
