Why are PAN Card Details Important?

PAN is not just a valid ID proof but is also important for employment, banking and many other purposes. Let’s get to know each of them below.

Employment Purposes

Since its introduction, the PAN card has been a mandatory document for most job applications and employment. In fact, you need your PAN to file your ITR. Mainly needed for taxation and recording TDS, PAN card details are also used for computing, validating as well as paying salaries, professional tax, direct tax, etc.

Identification Proof

Since it is issued by government authorities, a PAN card is considered to be a valid identity document. This can come in handy for a variety of purposes, like applying for utility connections.

Banking Purpose

A PAN card is one of the required documents for opening a bank account as well as various other financial transactions. This document has been made compulsory for opening accounts with all kinds of banks like cooperative banks, public banks, rural banks, and private banks. This directive has been issued with the aim of eradicating the problem of money laundering.

Individuals will be required to submit PAN card details in case of cash deposits exceeding Rs. 50,000 in a single day. The PAN card details are also required while opening a fixed deposit account exceeding Rs. 50,000 in value. This is done to keep a record of TDS for taxation on interest accrued from such deposits.

The current law dictates that all bank accounts have to be linked with the account holder’s PAN card. If the individual does not have a valid PAN, they have to provide Form 60. Zero balance savings account, Basic Savings Bank Deposit Accounts, and Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana accounts are some of the exceptions to this rule.

Other Monetary Situations that Demand a PAN Card

Given below are some of the other situations where PAN card details are required:

  • Insurance Premiums: If an individual is making insurance premium payments of over Rs. 50,000 in the financial year, they will be required to submit PAN card details.
  • Payment Wallets: Any digital transactions exceeding Rs. 20,000 in a month, require submission of PAN card details.

  • Mutual Funds: PAN card details are required for successfully investing in mutual funds, bonds, or debentures.
  • Debit/Credit Card Applications: Any person applying for a credit/debit card is required to submit PAN card details. Much like loan applications, rejection due to the lack of a valid PAN can impact your credit score negatively.
  • Vehicle Purchase: PAN card details are required for purchasing vehicles, except for two-wheelers.
  • Property Transactions: The law dictates that PAN card details are compulsory for property transactions that go over Rs. 5 lakh. PAN details are to be submitted by both the seller and buyer.
